before world war ii, yugoslavia already had a good foundation in the aviation industry. at that time, the ikarus company was able to develop and build some aircraft. although the factory suffered a lot of losses during world war ii, after world war ii, tito the ikarus 452m is a warm-up work and plans to develop an enlarged version of the actual combat jet fighter after its success.
the 452m was developed in the early 1950s, m stands for jet. a prototype was built and tested in 1953. judging from the layout of the aircraft, it is somewhat similar to the british sea vixen fighter. it is a mid-wing, twin-tail boom it is a small swept-wing aircraft with a length of only 5.97 meters, a wingspan of 5.25 meters, a height of 1.77 meters, and an empty weight of about 1,220 kilograms.
this small aircraft is equipped with two turbomeca palas small jet engines at the rear of the fuselage. the engines are arranged vertically, and the lower engine is located further back. the two engines have their own air inlets, and the lower engine air inlet is located at the wing root, the upper engine air inlets are located on both sides of the back, each of which is small in size.
this kind of engine has an empty weight of only tens of kilograms and a single thrust of 1.5kn. the 452m can reach a maximum flight speed of 780 kilometers/hour, a minimum speed of 190 kilometers/hour, and a practical ceiling of 9,800 meters. it has very little onboard fuel. the 452m the battery life is only about 1 hour and 15 minutes, but that doesn’t matter, after all, it is just an experimental machine.
the 452m is equipped with weapons. a 12.7mm machine gun is installed on each side of the body. therefore, it actually has certain attack capabilities. it may also be used as a technical verification. it is believed that the small body will not carry too much ammunition.
icarus built two 452m prototypes because relations with the west were good at that time, and many parts of the aircraft came from western countries, such as the engine from france. one of the prototypes experienced a fuel line failure during a flight in july 1953 and crashed in a cornfield. it is unknown how well the aircraft handled.
the original plan was to enlarge the body of the 452m, add an engine to increase thrust, and upgrade the weapon system to two 20mm aerial cannons, or four 12.7mm machine guns, and possibly rockets. if completed, it would be a this is a light jet fighter, not very powerful, only slightly better than the propeller-driven fighter left over from world war ii. perhaps the yugoslav air force is not optimistic about the 452m, so it gave up supporting the development of this project.
