From August 15 to 17, the Youth Exchange Meeting on the Innovation and Development of Edible Fungi Industry in the four central provinces of Henan, Hebei, Shandong, and Shanxi and the Second Youth Forum on Edible Fungi Industry in Henan Province were held in Zhengzhou. At the meeting, our reporter talked with representatives from the industry, scientific research, and government agencies on how to innovate and promote the high-quality development of the edible fungi industry.
Reporter: Edible fungi are a advantageous industry in our province. How will we plan and support the development of the industry in the future?
Zou Qingpeng (President of Henan Society of Agricultural Sciences): This conference is a good platform for communication and cooperation. It is of great significance for deepening the cooperation between our province and the three neighboring provinces in the research and development of edible fungi, promoting the innovative development of our province's edible fungi industry, and helping rural revitalization and the construction of a strong agricultural province.
China is the world's largest producer and consumer of edible fungi. In 2023, China's annual edible fungi production will reach more than 40 million tons, and the annual total output value will exceed 300 billion yuan. China's edible fungi production will account for more than 75% of the world's total, and its output value and export volume will rank first in the world. From the perspective of the big food view, edible fungi are a strategic industry with huge industrial potential and broad future prospects; from the perspective of market prospects, edible fungi are rich in nutrients and delicious. As people's living standards continue to improve, the demand for edible fungi products will also increase; from the perspective of nutritional value, edible fungi have extremely high nutritional value, and edible fungi are a healthy industry; from the perspective of rural revitalization, China's edible fungi market is huge, with steady growth and high added value, and is a people-enriching industry suitable for development; from the perspective of ecological civilization, edible fungi can effectively promote the virtuous cycle of agricultural ecology and contribute to the sustainable development of agriculture.
At present, after years of development, the edible fungi industry has made historic progress in scientific, industrial, large-scale, standardized, market-oriented, and improved production, processing, warehousing, and logistics conditions. In many aspects, it has been at the forefront of the world and achieved leapfrog development. It is worth noting that innovation is a strong driving force for the high-quality development of the edible fungi industry in the future.
In this youth exchange activity, we took innovation and development as the theme of the discussion, which grasped the key. To further expand and strengthen my country's edible fungi industry, we must further emancipate our minds, deepen reforms, develop new quality productivity, take the road of innovative development, and take biotechnology as the guide to further increase the research and development and innovation of edible fungi variety breeding and planting technology; take information technology as the guide to further increase the research and development and innovation of edible fungi production and processing technology; take the whole industry chain development concept as the guide to further increase the creation of edible fungi production, processing, and logistics systems; take standardization construction as the guide to further strengthen the creation of edible fungi "famous, special, excellent, and new" brands; take optimizing the development environment as the starting point to further increase the creation of social service systems such as policies, finance, taxation, finance, and insurance.
Reporter: As a dominant industry in our province, what is the development level of edible fungi? What strategies will be adopted in the future to promote the continuous development of the edible fungi industry?
Wei Wenxing (Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences): In recent years, the edible fungi industry in Henan Province has maintained a steady growth trend. According to statistics from the Henan Edible Fungi Association, the total output in 2023 exceeded 6 million tons, with a production value of 43 billion yuan. The annual export earnings have ranked first in the country for ten consecutive years, and it has remained the first in Henan Province's agricultural product exports, becoming a trump card for our province's agricultural product exports.
In Henan Province, 37 counties including Xixia, Lushi, and Qingfeng have listed the development of edible fungi as the leading industry for county agricultural development. Among them, the annual output value of Xixia's mushroom industry is 20 billion yuan, with 200,000 employees; Lushi's mushroom industry is aiming for an output value of 10 billion yuan, with more than 100,000 employees; a series of products with protected origins such as "Biyang Flower Mushroom", "Ruyang Mushroom", "Huixian Oyster Mushroom", and "Qingfeng White Mushroom" are well-known throughout the country. With 5 million employees in the province, the edible fungi industry has become a famous brand for farmers to increase their income.
As far as I know, the total output of edible fungi in Hebei Province is 3.38 million tons, with an output value of 23.1 billion yuan; the total output of Shandong Province is 3.0131 million tons, with an output value of 19 billion yuan, and there are 23 major edible fungi-growing counties; Shanxi Province has also achieved remarkable results in edible fungi scientific research, and the total output of edible fungi in the four central provinces accounts for 1/3 of the national total. This scale and influence are very impressive.
As a construction supporting unit, the Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences has scientifically and rationally arranged industrial innovation research in accordance with the actual industrial development of our province. Among them, the provincial edible fungus industry technology system has pioneered the first in the province in many aspects such as variety selection and breeding, and achievement cultivation. It has bred 30 new edible fungus varieties, accounting for 95% of the varieties bred in the province. The Provincial Academy of Agricultural Sciences also gives preferential treatment and support to system members in terms of team strength, platform conditions, scientific research funds, etc., and supports expert achievement cultivation and demonstration, promotion and application.
When the youth thrive, the country thrives; when the youth are strong, the country is strong. Innovative young talents are the source of national innovation vitality and the hope for scientific and technological development. Seeing so many young people in the edible fungi industry today, I deeply feel that we should give young talents more trust, better help, and stronger support, and support young talents to take the lead and play the leading role. Zheng Xiaojie (Director of the Science and Education Department of the Henan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs): The development of the edible fungi industry in the four provinces of Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan plays a vital role. Today, experts from the edible fungi industry technology system of the four provinces gathered in Zhengzhou to explore the regional collaborative innovation mechanism, give play to the role of experts from the four provinces, tap the wisdom of experts from the four provinces, promote the achievements of experts from the four provinces, and jointly promote the development of the regional edible fungi industry. This is an important action to implement the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and practice the big food concept. It is also an important measure to promote regional collaborative innovation.
The edible fungi industry has a large space and potential, good opportunities and prospects. The dietary structure of "one meat, one vegetable and one mushroom" is inseparable from edible fungi, and the development of rural characteristic industries of "one village, one product and one mushroom" is inseparable from edible fungi. The edible fungi industry has great potential. It is hoped that experts and scholars will learn from each other and make progress together through this exchange and seminar.
