Nanjing South Tunnel crosses Qinhuai District, Yuhuatai District, and Jiangning District, and passes under the Ning'an High-speed Railway, Beijing-Shanghai High-speed Railway, Shanghai-Chengdu Railway and other trunk railways, as well as Ningdan Highway, Niushou Avenue and other major transportation routes.The total length is 14.442 kilometers. It is a single-hole single-track tunnel with a designed speed of 120 kilometers per hour.

The shield section of the tunnel starts from the Meixiang Road working shaft in Yuhuatai District, passes under Nonghua River, Airport Expressway, Qinhuai New River, Hanfushan Beijing-Shanghai High-Speed ​​Railway existing tunnel, crosses over the S1 subway line, runs parallel to the S3 subway line for a long distance, and ends at the existing Hanfushan tunnel in Jiangning District. It is about 2.4 kilometers long.

The route passes through mudstone, sandstone and other strata, with many water areas and complex surface and underground environments. Especially when the shield machine passes under the Qinhuai New River section, the shallowest cover is only 2.6 meters, which is the shallowest cover encountered in domestic shield projects.

In view of the complex geological environment, many construction difficulties, high safety risks and complex technical conditions of the shield section of Nanjing South Tunnel, the project construction management unit Hefei Railway Hub Project Construction Command, in coordination with China Railway 14th Bureau and other participating units, and China Railway Construction Heavy Industry Group, "tailor-made" an earth pressure balance shield machine - "Ningwu" for the excavation construction of the shield section of Nanjing South Tunnel.

The shield machine has an excavation diameter of 9.33 meters, a total length of 132 meters, a weight of approximately 1,375 tons, and a total installed power of 4,305 kilowatts. It has made targeted improvements in the cutterhead structure, tool arrangement, slag transportation, excavation control, and shield tail detection. It uses a number of advanced intelligent technologies, such as the excavation chamber visual system and the shield tail brush wear detection system, which will effectively control the risks of shield construction and comprehensively improve excavation efficiency.

"After the 'Ningwu' shield machine was manufactured and accepted in Changsha in May this year, it was transported to the working shaft at the construction site by road. Our project team overcame adverse factors such as the small site and high temperature and scorching heat, and completed the on-site assembly and commissioning work to high standards according to the construction plan, ensuring that the shield machine started on schedule." said Zhang Fanjun, shield manager of the second branch of the Ningwu Railway Project of China Railway 14th Bureau.

It is reported that the Ningwu Railway is mainly used for freight transportation, while also taking into account a small amount of passenger transportation. It is an important infrastructure for improving the freight capacity of the eastern section of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and an important part of the railway corridor along the river.The Ningwu Railway Capacity Expansion and Reconstruction Project starts from Nanjing East marshalling yard in the north (not included), passes through Qixia District, Qinhuai District, Yuhuatai District, and Jiangning District of Nanjing City, enters Ma'anshan City, Anhui Province, passes through Dangtu County and enters Wuhu City, and finally reaches Wuhu East Station (not included).After the reconstruction, the total length of the line is 102.2 kilometers, of which the section from Cangbomen Station to Guxiong Station in Nanjing city is a newly built outer bypass line modification project with a line length of 29.7 kilometers; the remaining sections will undergo electrification and capacity expansion reconstruction, and the length of the main line of the reconstruction section is 72.48 kilometers.

The Ningwu Railway Capacity Expansion and Reconstruction Project will relocate the existing railway in Nanjing city (Cangbomen to Guxiong section), which will completely eliminate the safety risks of level crossings in this section, resolve the problems of urban division, noise interference, pollution emissions, traffic congestion, etc. caused by the original line passing through the city, and open up the city's development context.After the project is completed and put into operation, it will further optimize the regional railway network layout, which is of great significance for implementing the concept of "ecological priority, green development", accelerating the upgrading and adjustment of the industrial structure along the line, optimizing the spatial layout of urbanization, and enhancing the flexibility of the road network.
