Active deployment in multiple locations
"Vehicle-road-cloud integration" is a term in the field of intelligent connected vehicles. It refers to the use of new-generation information and communication technologies to integrate the physical space and information space of people, vehicles, roads, and clouds to achieve an information-physical system that is safe, energy-efficient, comfortable, and efficient in the operation of intelligent connected vehicle transportation systems.
According to the data, my country has built 17 national-level intelligent connected vehicle testing zones, 7 Internet of Vehicles pilot zones, and 16 "double-intelligence" pilot cities, opened more than 32,000 kilometers of test roads, issued more than 7,700 test licenses, and tested more than 120 million kilometers of mileage. More than 8,700 intelligent roadside units (RSUs) have been deployed in various places, and cloud control basic platform construction has been carried out in many places.
In May this year, Beijing issued a bidding announcement for the "vehicle-road-cloud integration" new infrastructure construction project. The project investment amounted to 9.9 billion yuan. It plans to select an area of approximately 2,324 square kilometers in Beijing to carry out intelligent transformation of 6,050 road intersections; in June, the "vehicle-road-cloud integration" major demonstration project in Wuhan, Hubei was approved by the Wuhan Development and Reform Commission, and the registered amount reached 17 billion yuan; in addition, Fuzhou, Ordos, Shenyang, Hangzhou and other cities have started bidding, and the construction of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" has entered a period of rapid development.
Shanghai is also actively building an innovative ecosystem for the intelligent connected vehicle industry and promoting the construction of a comprehensive demonstration of "vehicle-road-cloud integration". Pan Xiaohong, general manager of Shanghai International Automobile City (Group) Co., Ltd., introduced that Jiading District, Shanghai has achieved full opening of intelligent connected test roads, with a total mileage of 1,117 kilometers and a total of 636 roads. At present, Shanghai International Automobile City has deployed a cloud-controlled test and verification environment with full coverage of more than 70 kilometers of V2X, fusion perception, and high-precision maps. There are more than 70 unmanned special-purpose vehicles in the area to carry out demonstration applications such as unmanned delivery, unmanned cleaning, and unmanned retail.
According to the plan, the pilot application of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" of intelligent networked vehicles will further expand its scope, emphasizing the coordinated development of various links such as vehicles, roads, clouds, networks, maps, and safety, and covering different levels of networked functional applications such as collaborative warning, collaborative driving assistance, and collaborative automatic driving. At the same time, it is also necessary to clarify the organizational mechanism, the construction and operation subjects, and explore business models such as infrastructure investment, construction, and operation.
Bright future prospects
In recent years, my country has successively issued policies such as "Notice on the Pilot Application of "Vehicle-Road-Cloud Integration" for Intelligent Connected Vehicles", "Reference Guide for Large-Scale Construction and Application of "Vehicle-Road-Cloud Integration" for Intelligent Connected Vehicles (Version 1.0)", and "Measures on Creating New Consumption Scenarios and Cultivating New Consumption Growth Points" to vigorously support the testing and demonstration development of intelligent connected vehicles.
Recently, Beijing and Shanghai have successively issued the "Beijing Autonomous Driving Vehicle Regulations (Draft for Comments)" and "Several Policy Measures to Deepen the High-Quality Development of New Cities", planning to support high-level autonomous driving services in online car-hailing, taxis, as well as public transportation, passenger transportation and other scenarios. The commercialization of related services has received further policy support.
Wu Junxian, director of the Intelligent Connected Vehicle Business Unit of Shanghai International Automobile City (Group) Co., Ltd., said that "vehicle-road-cloud integration" is a long-term boost to the development of my country's intelligent connected vehicles. It is a pilot application carried out on the basis of national-level intelligent connected vehicle pilot demonstration zones, vehicle networking pilot zones, and "double-intelligence" pilot cities. It is mainly aimed at solving the problems faced by the industry, such as unclear investment and construction standards for intelligent infrastructure, unclear mutual empowerment effects between vehicle intelligence and infrastructure, and insufficient cross-domain integration.
As the key to promoting the large-scale industrial application of intelligent connected vehicles in the next stage, what impact will the release of this "vehicle-road-cloud integration" application pilot have on the industry, enterprises and local economy? The relevant person in charge of Mushroom Auto Union said that the expected results of this application pilot have far-reaching significance and role. It can not only expand the application scope of intelligent connected vehicles and create more business opportunities and market space for enterprises, but also help enterprises innovate business models, achieve sustainable development, reduce costs and improve efficiency. In addition, a unified standard and test evaluation system can regulate the market, which also means more policy support and resource allocation, helping enterprises to increase investment in technology research and development and innovation, promote industrial upgrading, and enhance the market competitiveness of industry enterprises.
Cui Dongshu, secretary-general of the Passenger Car Market Information Joint Branch of the China Automobile Dealers Association, said that with increased investment, infrastructure construction in various regions will reach a new level. Relevant companies can use roadside infrastructure to enhance the collaborative capabilities of "vehicle-road-cloud integration", achieve a better intelligent driving experience, and create new business models and greater development space.
Development faces challenges
With the accelerated implementation of the "vehicle-road-cloud integration" application pilot and the entry of high-level autonomous driving vehicles into commercial pilot operation, my country has become a hotbed for the development and innovation of intelligent connected vehicles in the world. However, the current construction of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" also faces certain challenges.
At present, most vehicle manufacturers mainly focus on the "single-vehicle intelligence" technology route. According to the relevant person in charge of Mushroom Auto Union, "single-vehicle intelligence" is difficult to solve the problem of segmented data connection, and the perception ability of "single-vehicle intelligence" is constrained. In addition, the construction of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" requires a large enough scale of roadside infrastructure to form a basic data network, and the cost issue is more prominent. In addition, data processing capabilities, cross-platform information integration, seamless connection and efficient collaboration between vehicles, roadside equipment and cloud platforms, etc. also need to be solved urgently.
However, the relationship between "single-vehicle intelligence" and "vehicle-road-cloud integration" is not severed. Li Keqiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief scientist of the National Intelligent Connected Vehicle Innovation Center, said that "single-vehicle intelligence" is the basis of "vehicle-road-cloud integration", "vehicle-road-cloud integration" is the upgrade of "single-vehicle intelligence", and the development path of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" is the inevitable trend of the evolution of intelligent vehicle technology. Wang Hui, vice president of Chongqing Changan Automobile Co., Ltd., believes that the technical route of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" is not contradictory to the technical route of "single-vehicle intelligence", and the two will develop in an integrated manner in the future, and the realization of "smart cars + smart roads + powerful clouds" in my country is just around the corner. In addition, the construction of "vehicle-road-cloud integration" in various places is still in its early stages, and a complete system architecture has not yet been built. There is a "fragmented" phenomenon in infrastructure construction, which makes it difficult to support the large-scale application of autonomous driving technology and connected functions.
From the perspective of the industry and enterprises, the biggest challenge is funding. Cui Dongshu believes that this challenge mainly includes whether the construction funds are sufficient, whether the funds can be recovered, whether sustainable profits can be achieved, and how much the enterprise relies on the vehicle-road-cloud infrastructure. He suggested that through innovation, "vehicle-road-cloud integration" should achieve breakthroughs in low cost and practicality, so that capital investment and effect output can be balanced, and ultimately form a closed business loop.
Zhang Yongwei, vice chairman and secretary general of the China Electric Vehicle 100 Forum, suggested that the core of the intelligent connected era is the coordination of multiple factors. It is necessary to establish an interconnected standard system, create new quality operators, and establish a new model of sustainable development. In addition, a comprehensive intelligent connected platform based on data penetration, construction and integrated supervision services should be formed to ultimately form a scientific road infrastructure construction plan.
