On August 8, at Xiannongtan, one of the elements of the Beijing Central Axis heritage, the "Keywords for the Protection and Inheritance of Beijing's Central Axis (Chinese-English)" was released. The book was jointly compiled by the Office of the Beijing Historical and Cultural City Protection Committee and the Beijing Urban Planning and Design Institute, and translated and published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. The book contains 95 keywords, covering three aspects: historical and cultural value, historical and cultural elements, and world heritage knowledge, helping people at home and abroad to understand Beijing and the Central Axis, and work together to protect and inherit this common heritage of mankind.
On July 27, the 46th UNESCO World Heritage Conference passed a resolution to include "Beijing Central Axis - A Masterpiece of China's Ideal Capital Order" in the World Heritage List. The new book, which was first released during this heritage conference, was highly recommended by the Beijing Central Axis World Heritage Protection Office and is a gift to Beijing Central Axis. Beijing Central Axis, as China's largest and most complete traditional capital axis, is not only the soul and backbone of Beijing's old city, but also a powerful witness to the continuity, innovation, unity, inclusiveness and peace of Chinese civilization.
The book contains 95 keywords, covering three aspects: historical and cultural value, historical and cultural elements, and world heritage knowledge. The book is based on international organization documents, national laws and regulations, academic research results and other authoritative materials, and is supported by authoritative experts in the industry, management units of various heritage elements, and China's permanent mission to UNESCO. Among them, the historical and cultural value chapter contains 20 keywords such as Beijing's city axis, traditional axis, and harmony between man and nature; the historical and cultural elements chapter contains 52 keywords such as Beijing City in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, four-layer city walls, and chessboard road network; the world heritage knowledge chapter contains 23 keywords such as cultural heritage, world heritage, and World Heritage Convention.
The reporter noticed that the book translated "Central Axis of Beijing City" into The Central Axis of Beijing City, "Traditional Central Axis" into The Traditional Central Axis, "Li and Yue Working in Synergy" into Li and Yue Working in Synergy, and "Zuo Zu You She" into Ancestral Temple on the Left and Altar of Land and Grain on the Right. The book also includes a chronological table of the evolution of the central axis, recording important events from 1267 to 2023.
At the press conference, Wang Jun, a researcher at the Palace Museum and director of the Palace Museum Research Institute, explained the three key words "建极随猷", "允执绝中" and "皇建有极". Among them, "建极随猷" is a plaque hanging in the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Forbidden City, referring to the king's responsibility to establish national order and promote the rule of education; "允执绝中" is a plaque hanging in the Hall of Central Harmony in the Forbidden City, referring to the emperor's responsibility to abide by the law of distinguishing directions, correcting positions and setting times represented by "中" and governing the country with the concept of Zhongzhengrenhe; "皇建有极" is a plaque hanging in the Hall of Preserving Harmony in the Forbidden City, referring to the king's responsibility to abide by the Zhongzheng way when governing the country. All three keywords reflect the importance of "中" in national governance.
Relevant person in charge said that they believe that this book and the previously published "Keywords for the Protection of Beijing's Historical and Cultural City (Chinese-English)" will help to better leverage Beijing's advantages as a historical capital and national cultural center, strengthen cultural exchanges with all parts of the world, and jointly promote cultural prosperity and development, cultural heritage protection, and exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.
