our reporter li jing reports from beijing

ji lin, director of the media and education center of the china children and teenagers development service center and deputy editor-in-chief of the youth blue book, has participated in the blue book survey project for 18 consecutive years since 2006. looking back on the 18 years of follow-up observation, ji lin said: "the blue book should be the project with the longest continuous follow-up observation of minors' internet use data, and there have been many first discoveries and important results in the past ten years."

ji lin cited an example, saying that in 2010, the blue book first found that there was a turning point in the trust of minors in online information. in 2012, it was first found that the speed and rate of minors going online exceeded those of adults. china began to access the internet in 1994, and it was exactly 18 years in 2012. therefore, it was also in the 2012 blue book that the concept of china's minors being "indigenous people of the internet age" was first proposed. in terms of countermeasures and suggestions, the blue book also first proposed the internet real-name system, first proposed the establishment of a special area for minors, first conducted a special investigation on online violence, and promoted the implementation of major decisions that are conducive to protecting the rights and interests of minors, such as the widespread use of youth mode.

regarding the "blue book" released this year, ji lin's most prominent feeling is that parents' literacy on minors' internet use is improving.

first, parents have gradually come to understand their children's use of the internet from their perspective. "over the years of investigation, we have questionnaires for minors and questionnaires specifically for parents, but the questionnaires for parents were not continued in later surveys." ji lin explained that over the years, children's evaluation of the internet has been relatively positive, but the questionnaires for parents were not continued. in fact, it can be seen that the views of children and parents are different, and even opposite.

"data from the blue book released this year show that when young people use the internet, the values of the three major functions of entertainment, learning and communication have become relatively equal, gradually forming a three-way split, which means that young people are not just using the internet for fun," said ji lin.

in addition, if we put ourselves in the shoes of teenagers, primary school students have to go to school at around 7 a.m. and finish school at around 5 p.m. they have to do homework after returning home. junior high school and high school students have evening self-study classes, and some children have extracurricular classes. ji lin said: "i think minors are working 12 to 14 hours of high intensity from monday to friday, which is probably more intense and longer than most adults. therefore, parents should start from a child's normal need for communication and relaxation, and correctly view their children's use of the internet."

furthermore, how to improve parents' guidance on their children's use of the internet, ji lin believes that this requires the joint efforts of the whole society, including the use of youth mode, corporate social responsibility, popular science articles, etc. in particular, it is necessary to focus on developing some internet functions that are beneficial to minors, rather than pure entertainment.

ji lin also emphasized that in the internet age, it is very important for parents to improve their online literacy, but it is even more important not to forget offline companionship. "only when parents truly accompany their children can they resonate with them."
