original title: long-term exercise promotes "healthier" abdominal fat
science and technology daily (reporter zhang jiaxin) according to a report in the latest issue of nature metabolism, a team from the university of michigan in the united states found that if obese people exercise regularly for a long time, their abdominal tissue can store fat more effectively than those obese people who do not exercise regularly. in other words, abdominal fat is "healthier."
the team compared two groups of obese adults: the 16 participants in the first group exercised at least 4 times a week for 2 years, with an average exercise time of 11 years; the 16 participants in the second group never exercised regularly, but they were similar to the former in terms of body fat mass, weight and gender.
the team collected samples of fat tissue under the skin in the abdomen from both groups. they found that the fat tissue of exercisers had unique structural and biological features that increased its ability to store fat, while the non-exercisers did not have these features. specifically, the fat tissue of exercisers had more blood vessels, mitochondria and beneficial proteins, and less collagen, a type of collagen that can interfere with metabolism, and cells that cause inflammation.
this study suggests that increasing the ability to store subcutaneous fat through exercise can reduce the need to store fat in internal organs and other places. however, increasing the ability to store fat is not the same as gaining fat, which mainly comes from overeating.
