in the minds of many station wagon fans, there are three types of station wagons: audi station wagons, volvo station wagons, and other station wagons. yes, i agree with this statement in my heart, especially i love volvo station wagons.

at the same time, i have always been curious about how the v60 i bought 10 years ago would perform today, and how the product in 2024 would change and improve. so, i decided to put the two products together, 10 years apart, to see what different experiences the two generations of v60 would have.

these changes are obvious

let's first talk about the prerequisites of the two cars. my own car is the 2014 t5 zhiya version, with an official guide price of 359,900 yuan. the test drive model is the 2024 b5 zhiya sports version, priced at 439,900 yuan. in other words, after 10 years, the price of the same zhiya version has not only not dropped, but has even increased by 80,000 yuan. at the same time, it is interesting that both cars use almost the same 2.0t+8at power system, but the maximum power of the 2.0t engine has been increased from 245 horsepower to 250 horsepower.

when it comes to the models of the two eras, the biggest difference is first of all in the appearance. the difference can be clearly seen from the appearance. however, this does not mean that one generation of models will be good-looking or not. they are just different in design style. for example, the old model adopts a more rounded and streamlined design, while the current model adopts a lower and straighter body shape, which looks tougher. if we look at the models of previous generations, this generation of models has returned to the design of the 850 era.

but no matter which generation of car, they all have good-looking and durable designs, it’s just that the design of a certain generation of car is more in line with personal aesthetics. for example, i will not deny that the design of the old car is good-looking, and i often want to look back at it, but i also think that the design of the current car is very good-looking, and i have thought about changing cars several times.

of course, the straighter body line design brings the most intuitive change. the body design looks longer, and its length has indeed increased from 4635mm to 4778mm, an increase of 143mm. this makes the current model have more ample trunk space and rear space, especially in the trunk part, which can be obviously seen to be longer than the old model.

in addition to the exterior, the new model also has a big change in the interior. first of all, the center console, the iconic center console buttons have disappeared without a trace, replaced by a center console screen that integrates multiple functions. fortunately, volvo still placed some commonly used buttons below the screen. combined with the bowers & wilkins audio system and the crystal shift lever, the luxurious atmosphere is quite in place, and the name "volvo" is not for nothing.

at the same time, the height of the current model has also been reduced from the original 1479mm to 1437mm. this 42mm height change can be clearly felt in the driver's seat. in the old v60, the overall feeling of sitting in the driver's seat is a bit like being lifted up. although it is not as high as the nio, it is higher than the regular car seat, and this is only the driver's seat. the co-pilot seat can be much lower than the driver's seat.

but in the new model, the main driver's seat is obviously much lower than before. in my opinion, it is finally a normal seat. even when the seat is lowered to the lowest position, there is still a hint of combat feeling.

as i said just now, the increase in the length of the car has the most direct effect of improving the rear space and trunk space. from the pictures, we can see that its performance in these two aspects is quite outstanding, and it is obviously more advantageous than other station wagons or shooting brakes. and most importantly, the curtains and rear grids that a station wagon should have are not missing, and a 12v power supply port is also added to the trunk for outdoor use. it is not difficult to see that volvo is really persistent in making station wagons, and it can also allow users to travel in station wagons.

another point is that many people say they like station wagons because they have the same loading capacity as suvs and the same driving experience as sedans. i thought the old model was pretty good. after all, if the foundation was not good, volvo would not have launched the polestar performance version on this basis. on the current model, you can feel that the driving control will have better performance. the lower body makes the center of gravity lower, which makes you more confident when turning quickly, and it can also provide enough support. in simple terms, this chassis is full of european tuning. no matter what road conditions you are driving on, you will not be disappointed.

these places have actually regressed?

however, having said that, i think the new model is a little lacking in some aspects, and is even inferior to the old model. the first thing to say is the operation of the entire car system, whether it is the operation logic, response speed, or other aspects, it is even inferior to the xiaopeng mona m03 that i tried recently. to be honest, this is indeed behind the times and is really unworthy of its own price of 400,000.

in addition, what i find most unbearable is that the engine start-stop function cannot be turned off on the current model. when i got the car, i tried to turn it off, but found that there was no button to operate it. later, i searched online and some car owners said that it can be turned off by switching to m gear, but it still doesn't work.

putting aside the illusory data of how much oil can be saved, from the most intuitive and direct driving experience, it is really annoying. especially on congested roads, every time you stop, it automatically enters the start-stop state, and constantly switches working states, which really brings a very bad experience. you said that in europe, especially in northern europe, the roads are very smooth, with few cars, and you have to drive for at least an hour before stopping. the domestic road conditions are obviously different. volvo should also be aware of this. in addition, it can be turned off manually before the 24 models. i don’t know why this button has been simplified on the current models. i sincerely hope that it can return to the next model.

in addition, it is precisely because of this start-stop function that 99% of the time you will use the start-stop function when you temporarily park. if you put the car in p gear, unbuckle your seat belt and open the door at this time, the vehicle will automatically shut down. at this time, you may just want to get something from the back seat or trunk, or even open the door for the co-pilot politely, but you don’t really want to shut down the car. however, you have to start the car again after getting back in. at this time, you will really feel that this operation is quite troublesome.

editor says:as a car from northern europe and full of scandinavian style, the volvo v60 has never disappointed people, and even became the top 3 in many people's station wagon purchase list. spanning 10 years, from the perspective of car owners, looking at the two generations of models, it can be seen that safety, comfort, practicality, driving pleasure and other aspects have indeed been greatly improved, which also proves that station wagons have long occupied an indispensable and extremely important position in the volvo brand. in the future, will volvo bring us more outstanding v60 models, or will the v60 model transform to electrification? these are all what i look forward to. so if you are asked to choose a station wagon, will the volvo v60 appear in your consideration range?
