the report shows that according to the different raw materials and brewing processes, whiskey is mainly divided into malt whiskey, grain whiskey and blended whiskey. in 2023, the volume and value of china's imported spirits showed an upward trend, with whiskey decreasing in volume and increasing in price. imported whiskey accounted for 20.8% of the total import of spirits and 26.3% of the total import volume, and entered an overall adjustment period. the united kingdom, the united states, japan and ireland are the main sources of china's imported whiskey. in 2023, china's total whiskey production capacity exceeded 50,000 kiloliters, with a year-on-year growth rate of 127%, surpassing the total whiskey import volume of 32,600 kiloliters in the same year for the first time.
at the meeting, yuan yue introduced that the rise of china's whiskey industry in recent years is no longer limited to the circulation stage, but has transformed into china's whiskey production and project construction. according to statistics, there are already 45 companies in the construction, production and construction stages, covering 12 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions, of which 26 are in production, 10 are under construction, 8 are to be built, and 1 is in trial operation. in terms of the scale of china's whiskey production capacity, the actual distillation capacity of china's whiskey industry is 45,000 kiloliters, the total designed distillation capacity is 80,000 kiloliters, and the total capacity development plan is 250,000 kiloliters.
the report also shows that the top ten whisky consumption markets in 2023 will be beijing, shanghai, guangzhou, shenzhen, chengdu, xiamen, tianjin, suzhou, yantai and dongguan. according to statistics from e-commerce platform jd.com, the top ten imported brands in 2023 will mainly come from the uk, japan and the us.
the deep cultivation of imported whiskey in china has opened up the whiskey consumer market, achieved diversification, and provided more market opportunities for domestic whiskey. the sales revenue of domestic whiskey products is between 100 yuan/liter and 2,500 yuan/liter, mainly focusing on offline channels, online channels, and private channels, with the three channels accounting for 78%, 21%, and 1% respectively.
yuan yue said that brands and production areas have great influence, which also requires domestic whiskey to work hard on brand and quality, and to create chinese-style whiskey products and standard systems.
it is also understood that the newly revised national standard "quality requirements for spirits part 1: whiskey" is expected to be released by the end of this year. the previously released draft standard "quality requirements for spirits part 1: whiskey" made specific provisions on the definition and aging time of whiskey. for example, malt whiskey must be aged for no less than two years and must be aged in oak barrels; single malt whiskey must be aged in oak barrels for at least three years; grain whiskey will not emphasize that it must be aged in oak barrels, but it must be wooden barrels with an aging time of at least two years; flavored whiskey is clearly a beverage wine.
in addition, the group standards that the china alcoholic drinks association is initiating or waiting to release also include chinese whiskey product certification rules, chinese whiskey tasting glass design specifications and general requirements, etc.
