this year, principal liang xin applied for the third extension of his aid to tibet. this is his seventh year at lhasa beijing experimental middle school. at the same time, the middle school also celebrated its 10th anniversary.

ten years ago, this school was unknown. today, the undergraduate enrollment rate has increased from 40% in 2014 to 97% this year, and the rate of admission to key universities has increased from less than 10% to 81%. some of its operating conditions have reached the level of famous schools in beijing.

how did this middle school complete its transformation?

from a “disorganized group” to self-management

basangdeji has been a teacher for 20 years. the first 10 years were spent at the predecessor of lhasa beijing experimental middle school, lhasa no. 2 senior middle school, also known as the "old second senior middle school". the school conditions were poor and the students' academic performance was poor.

in august 2014, the "old second high school" was transformed into the beijing experimental middle school in lhasa, which was built with assistance from beijing. in that year, beijing pioneered the "group-based" education aid model for tibet.

as an educational aid to tibet, liang xin came to lhasa beijing experimental middle school in 2018 to serve as the vice principal of moral education.

when he first arrived at the school, he was impressed by the students' diligence and eagerness to learn. "there are many children reading books on campus. such scenes are rare." but he also found that there is still a lot of work to be done, from hardware to management.

at that time, the huge school had no student union because many teachers believed that students could not manage themselves. one teacher believed that students must be kept under close watch at all times, as they would become a “disorganized group” if they were a little lax. however, liang xin believed that “students’ abilities need to be cultivated.”

with his insistence, the school established a student union. students independently designed and recorded programs for the campus tv station; every year, students were responsible for most of the work, from program arrangement to stage presentation at the campus art festival. liang xin remembered that a student who was usually very shy stood on the stage of the campus top ten singers competition, and the audience burst into applause as soon as he opened his mouth.

what liang xin wants to do is to provide more such stages for students so that they can find opportunities to shine.

from indoctrination teaching to "intellectual education"

over the past 10 years, a total of 299 educational talents have traveled from beijing to the snowy plateau in batches; the "group-style" aid to tibet has also brought profound changes to the classroom teaching and educational concepts of tibetan primary and secondary schools.

liang xin believes that the indoctrination teaching concept has constrained the development of the school. to this end, the tibet education aid team proposed the goal of "updating educational concepts, enhancing connotation-based development, and building a first-class school in the region." in recent years, the school has vigorously promoted the "zhi da education" model, focusing on the cultivation of students' learning ability.

wang dongmei, a physics teacher for the third grade, came to the school in august last year. in order to stimulate students' interest in learning, she specially opened a "fun physics" class, leading students to do "technological small productions" and physics experiments. driven by interest, the physics scores of students in the three classes are among the best in the grade.

basandji noted that in recent years, there have been more and more opportunities for educational docking. "every year, teachers can 'go out' to observe the teaching process in the mainland; at the same time, they can also 'invite in' and invite mainland experts to listen to local teachers' classes and hold cutting-edge education lectures."

liang xin introduced that the school has helped 231 local teachers and 46 teams through the "one-to-one", "one-to-many" and "many-to-many" forms of teachers aiding tibet to improve the teaching ability of local teachers.

wang dongmei and her apprentice grew together through listening to and evaluating each other's lessons. last september, wang dongmei's apprentice was going to participate in a class competition organized by lhasa city, and the master and apprentice prepared lessons together. "he polished the lesson, and i listened to and evaluated the lesson. the hard work paid off, and we finally won the first prize in the class competition," said wang dongmei.

with meticulous efforts, the school's teaching results have achieved a new peak. the college entrance examination pass rate for the class of 2023 is 100%, and the rate of admission to key universities is 79%; the average score of the high school entrance examination exceeded that of the class of 2022 by 43 points.

from knowledge transfer to cultural integration

over the past 10 years, the “group-based” aid work of educational talents in tibet has yielded fruitful results.

data shows that the number of people with a college education per 100,000 people in tibet increased from 5,507 in 2010 to 11,019 in 2020, and the average years of education for new labor force increased to 13.1 years.

at the same time, the results of cultural integration are everywhere, and lhasa beijing experimental middle school is one of the epitomes of this.

many students have continuously broadened their horizons and lit up their dreams through the "cloud-based learning" and "face-to-face" correspondence between teachers and students in beijing and tibet, as well as irregular visiting studies.

qiu zong, a sophomore student, recorded his study journey in poetic language: "in the early morning, the national flag guard marched across chang'an avenue with vigorous steps. climbing the badaling great wall, the majestic appearance of the wall stirred my inner pride. when i looked up at the hall of supreme harmony, i understood its vicissitudes over the past century."

in june, high school student gasong danba performed the folk dance "yalong ham song" on the stage of the national grand theater. in his eyes, the deep emotion of national unity was embodied at this moment.

in the fusion of hearts, the seeds of dreams also quietly sprout.

after meeting her "pen pals" in beijing, the eighth grade student renzeng zhuoma said that china has a history of 5,000 years, and even though it has thousands of years of history and spans the vast expanse of land, young people with pioneering potential should have hills and valleys in their hearts and mountains and rivers in their eyes.

as basangdeji said: "lhasa beijing experimental high school has shortened the time and space distance between lhasa and beijing, blended culture and feelings, demonstrated the sense of community of the chinese nation, and fulfilled the dreams of countless students."
