"in china, for china", in recent years, this sentence has repeatedly appeared in the public speeches of senior leaders of international automobile giants.

more often than not, this sentence emphasizes that as foreign brands, they hope to continue to deepen their presence in the chinese market in the new energy era and launch better quality automotive products for chinese users.

nissan's "in china, for china" strategy not only continues to launch safer cars that better meet the needs of chinese users, but also continues to contribute to the development of china's road traffic safety.

not long ago, the 18th china road traffic safety forum was successfully held in beijing. as the co-organizer of the forum, nissan motor has participated in the forum for the 18th consecutive year.

seigo watanabe, deputy general manager of the electronic technology and system technology development headquarters, ad/adas (autonomous driving/advanced driver assistance system) & chassis control development department, and general strategy group of nissan motor company, and osamu niikura, deputy general manager of nissan (china) investment co., ltd., attended the forum together and had in-depth exchanges with some media including china netcom after their keynote speeches.

watanabe seigo, deputy general manager of the general strategy group, ad/adas (automated driving/advanced driver assistance system) & chassis control development department, electronic technology and system technology development headquarters, nissan motor co., ltd., delivered a keynote speech

the theme of this forum is "building a new quality of traffic safety productivity - thoughts on the innovative development of icv/nev". it aims to summarize the development and application results of current new road traffic safety technologies as well as the opportunities and challenges they face in the context of the development of new industries, new models and new momentum, and to further explore and think about how to develop more efficient and safer new quality of traffic productivity.

at the forum, shogo watanabe introduced china's road traffic safety methods and china's accident analysis results, and shared the challenges related to electric bicycles from the perspective of autonomous driving, how v2x technology assists autonomous driving operations, and nissan's autonomous driving methods.

he said that despite the increasing number of motor vehicles in china in recent years, the number of traffic accidents and the number of deaths in traffic accidents have shown a downward trend. on the other hand, as the number of electric bicycles increased, the number of deaths in traffic accidents involving electric bicycle riders increased by about 10 times between 2004 and 2022. therefore, for automobile companies, in the field of autonomous driving, scenario exercises related to non-motor vehicles (including electric bicycles) are the most challenging.

to help improve safe driving and road traffic safety, nissan is using vehicle-to-everything (v2x) technology to conduct road tests for five potential "target and event detection and response" scenarios: traffic signals, pedestrians crossing the road, vehicles merging from adjacent lanes, vehicles turning, and vehicles ahead changing lanes.

it is reported that nissan has carried out v2x field operation tests in suzhou. based on suzhou's government cloud and road infrastructure, it can effectively support intelligent connected vehicles (icv) to overcome the limitations of independent systems, achieve coordinated development of smart cities and intelligent connected vehicles, enrich autonomous driving travel scenarios, and improve road travel efficiency and safety.

so, what is v2x?

v2x (vehicle to everything) refers to the information exchange between vehicles and the outside world. vehicles equipped with this system can automatically select the best driving route in terms of road conditions by analyzing real-time traffic information in autonomous driving mode, thereby greatly alleviating traffic congestion. in addition, by using on-board sensors and camera systems, it can also sense the surrounding environment and make rapid adjustments, thus achieving "zero traffic accidents."

in watanabe shogo's opinion, v2x technology is a very important technology, and its biggest role is to show the driver things that are invisible to the sensor in a visible way. with the help of the v2x system, the vehicle can predict in advance whether an object will rush out from the shadow, and notify the driver and passengers in advance, so that the driver and passengers can feel more at ease during the driving process without panic.

after rapid development in recent years, autonomous driving assistance functions have been accepted by more and more users and are also one of the directions that various car companies are competing to focus on.

as an automobile company driven by innovative technologies, nissan is continuing to evolve more advanced driver assistance systems in the era of intelligent connected vehicles.

shogo watanabe said that from the propilot intelligent driving technology launched in 2016 to the propilot 2.0 intelligent driving technology launched in 2019, nissan has continuously helped drivers reduce traffic congestion on highways and the burden of long-distance driving, and provided all-round assistance for the safety of drivers, passengers and related participants on the road.

today, nissan propilot intelligent driving technology has been introduced into the chinese market and installed on major models such as nissan tanlu.

it is reported that in order to cope with more complex road conditions, nissan is using the next-generation lidar to develop a new driver assistance technology - ground truth perception technology. this technology can effectively reduce accidents by using a highly accurate and real-time vehicle surrounding environment information perception system.

nissan plans to complete the development of this technology by the mid-2020s, and will first install it on some new models, and plans to apply it to all new models by fiscal 2030.

since last year, some foreign brands have chosen to cooperate with chinese automakers to improve their smart cabin and smart driving capabilities. is nissan also currently cooperating with local chinese companies?

due to commercial confidentiality, watanabe shogo did not directly mention the specific name of the chinese company, but he confirmed that nissan is indeed currently cooperating with china's leading autonomous driving technology company.

osamu shinkura added that in the future development process in china, nissan hopes to invite partner companies to participate in the development process from the early stages of the project, share knowledge, experience and skills with each other, so as to optimize the entire development process and achieve mutual benefits.

niikura osamu, deputy general manager of nissan (china) investment co., ltd.

it is true that chinese automakers are developing smart driving at a rapid pace, but nissan, as an international auto giant that launched smart driving technology earlier than china's new forces, seems to be "getting up early and arriving late".

but in my opinion, it is precisely because of its international car-making background and world-renowned brand influence that nissan does not need to rush into the market. its brilliant achievements that have withstood the test of history have given nissan the capital and confidence to launch new technologies related to driver and passenger safety when they are fully mature.

in this regard, watanabe shogo admitted that nissan has realized that chinese companies are indeed developing intelligent driving technology at a very fast speed. in order to provide a safer, more comfortable and faster travel experience, nissan is now considering how to speed up the development progress.

at the same time, he emphasized that although intelligent driving technology is very convenient, nissan must confirm its safety and reliability before it can be provided to the market.

he said: "as an automobile company, this is the most important issue for us. we hope to verify every technology and ensure that it is safe before launching it to the market. while launching new technologies for everyone, we always put safety first to achieve the best travel experience."

nissan's thoughts on china's road traffic safety are not only reflected in innovative technologies, but also in road safety education for users.

shinkura osamu introduced that in terms of road traffic safety, cars, people and society should work together as a whole. nissan believes that efforts should be made in more aspects, both in japan and china, such as popularizing traffic safety awareness among the elderly or children, publishing some reading materials or holding some traffic safety publicity activities.

at the same time, he mentioned that similar activities are currently being held in japan, such as advocating people not to drive after drinking, or to turn on the headlights when driving in the evening when the light becomes dim.

compared with the new forces that excessively pursue technological innovation and user guidance, it is the responsibility of international auto giants such as nissan to not only build good cars but also educate users on road safety and continuously popularize traffic safety awareness.

"zero accidents" and "zero casualties" are nissan's corporate vision. based on this vision, nissan will continue to actively promote china's road traffic safety practices, and spare no effort in popularizing automobile safety knowledge, creating safety technology vehicles, and building a traffic safety society. through its efforts at the three levels of people, vehicles, and society, it will continue to help china's road traffic safety cause move forward.
