When he was in the army, he took root in the barracks, practiced driving skills, and devoted himself to the country; after demobilization, he regarded the mine as his home, loved his job, and worked diligently. He did not lose his ambition after retirement, and he did not fade away after retirement. He condensed his iron-willed military spirit into the healthy development of the enterprise and showed dazzling brilliance. He is Geng Houjie, a veteran of the Coal Transportation and Sales Center of Shandong Energy Northwest Mining Shaozhai Coal Industry.
A fully wound pendulum
In 1990, Geng Houjie enlisted in the army. One person joins the army, the whole family is honored. With his parents' advice, he embarked on the journey of joining the army. In the army, he obeyed orders and practiced hard. He was a car soldier, studying the mechanical structure of the vehicle assiduously, and carefully exploring the working principles. He not only knew how to drive, but also knew how to repair. The green military camp has trained Geng Houjie to endure hardships and dare to fight hard battles. Due to his outstanding performance, he has been commended by the Military Logistics Department many times. In 1992, he gloriously joined the Communist Party of China. In November 2020, he came to the transportation and marketing center of Shaozhai Coal Industry Company from the former Xuchang Coal Mine. "I was a soldier and a party member. I must endure hardships first, enjoy later, and encourage myself and be self-disciplined." Geng Houjie often reminds himself like this.
Shaozhai Coal Industry is located in the Ganlong Plateau, with high terrain, mountains and plateaus, rugged roads, low temperatures during the day and night, and easy to freeze. In February 2023, Lingtai had a heavy snowfall, which blocked all coal-hauling vehicles under the only winding mountain road. There was no way. In order not to affect normal production, the coal transportation and marketing center could only temporarily sell the coal in the warehouse. Two days later, as soon as the sky cleared, the director organized personnel to spread salt along the coal transportation road while issuing a "death order": all the coal that fell to the ground must be loaded and shipped out within three days. Geng Houjie calculated that all the coal products that fell to the ground added up to more than 15,000 tons. In addition to the normal remote control loading, the loader must load at least 5,000 tons a day to complete the task. "I can't drop the chain at the critical moment. I am a veteran and I must take the lead." Geng Houjie cheered himself up while getting on the loader. For three days in a row, he asked his colleagues to bring him two steamed buns when he was hungry and a glass of cold water when he was thirsty. He spent more than 12 hours on the train every day. After three days, the coal yard was cleared out, but his belt had shrunk by two buttonholes.
Whenever he has free time, he is either directing the order of coal transport vehicles or driving a watering truck to spray water. When Lao Geng drives a watering truck, he always keeps a shovel in the cab. If he sees coal spilled on the ground or a dirty place, he will immediately take out the shovel to clean it up. Colleagues say that Lao Geng is a person who can't sit still.
An "innovation expert" with a brain full of ideas
Lao Geng is good at observation and thinking, and small changes and reforms are his strengths.
Once, when loading coal, Lao Geng found that the distance between the loader and the truck was no less than 15 meters. Could the distance be shortened? So, Lao Geng got off the truck with the task he had set for himself, marked the ground in advance, and then got on the truck to try to load the truck in the shortest time and with the shortest distance. After several rounds of testing, he successfully created the "10-meter loading method for loader", which can load 6 trucks in the time it took to load 5 trucks. This not only improved work efficiency, but also reduced fuel consumption.
Last December, the company bought a sprinkler truck for the center. When the truck first arrived, the careful Lao Geng found that the sprinkler pipes were spraying water out in a cross direction. This method of watering is only suitable for cleaning roads and is not practical at all in a coal yard of more than 10,000 square meters. Because no matter how many times the sprinkler truck runs back and forth, the coal dust and sludge that are flushed out are either here or there, which wastes both oil and water. So Lao Geng used his brain and innovatively closed one water outlet pipe and opened only one to spray water in one direction. As a result, the coal yard was flushed spotlessly. As a result, the "single-pipeline flushing method" came into being under Lao Geng's name.
Since last year, Lao Geng has proposed more than 40 improvements and reforms, all of which have been applied at work sites. Therefore, his colleagues praise him as an "innovation expert" with a brain full of ideas.
A penny pincher
The coal transportation and marketing center has two loaders and one watering truck. To save fuel, Lao Geng strictly requires the drivers in his team to fill a tank of fuel and spray water at least a certain number of times in the meetings before and after work. Therefore, his colleagues jokingly call him a "stingy guy".
Once, Lao Li and Lao Wang from the sales team asked the loader driver Xiao Hu to help them clean the loose coal on the No. 3 weighbridge. "The loader doesn't cost money to use oil, right? You can just use a small car to carry these shovelfuls of loose coal." Lao Geng found out and stopped him on the spot. "The loader's oil doesn't cost you money, so why not save the trouble by leaving it there?" Xiao Hu was a little dissatisfied. "The mine implements internal market-oriented management, and the savings are ours. Where did the extra 350 yuan in your salary last month come from? Don't you know?" Lao Geng's words made Xiao Hu blush and shut up.
Before the end of last year, affected by the coal market, coal prices fell continuously. With the decline in coal prices, freight rates naturally fell as well. In order to earn more freight, the drivers who hauled the medium coal thought that the water content just released from the cabin was too high and they had to wait for the medium coal to be emptied and drained before hauling. Old Geng thought: "The medium coal has to be loaded out after being emptied from the bunker. This back and forth not only increases the workload, but also doubles the fuel consumption of the vehicles." So Old Geng worked with the drivers one by one, "The density of medium coal is large. Even if it is emptied from the bunker, not much water will evaporate in three to five days. You wait for one day at the mine to drain the water. Those who are close can haul it twice. Everyone, calculate carefully, is it better to haul one more trip or wait for the water content to be drained?" The coal haulers calculated and thought that what Old Geng said really made sense, so they all began to compete to take the medium coal from the bunker. Old Geng calculated and worked, and in a year, the fuel consumption of the loader alone saved the company nearly 40,000 yuan.
Time flies, and now Lao Geng is in his fifties. Although the years have aged his face, the unique iron-blooded passion of a soldier has not diminished at all. His resolute face and deep eyes all reflect his perseverance and calmness. He is using practical actions to interpret the sincere feelings and mission of a retired veteran who has not faded after retirement.
