This is totally out of the question! The gold I bought for more than 6,000 yuan only weighed 5.28 grams.
The incident happened not long ago when Ms. Chen bought a pure gold ring and a bracelet at a gold jewelry store in Baiyun District for a total of 6,609 yuan. Since the store sold gold at a "fixed price" format, Ms. Chen asked the guide about the weight of the ring and bracelet several times afterwards, but was rejected.
So, Ms. Chen weighed the gold she bought in other ways. The result surprised her - the ring weighed 0.88 grams and the bracelet weighed 4.4 grams. According to the total price and weight, the unit price of gold was as high as 1,137 yuan/gram and 1,275 yuan/gram, which was much higher than the market price of gold on the day of purchase.
Ms. Chen believed that the store concealed the weight of the gold jewelry it sold and misled consumers. She then filed a complaint with the Baiyun District Market Supervision Bureau.
After inspection by law enforcement officers, the jewelry labels of the merchants involved, such as pure gold rings and pure gold Hetian jade rings for sale, only had information such as product name and price, but no weight. Combined with the on-site inspection and the evidence provided by Ms. Chen, it was confirmed that the problem reported by Ms. Chen was true.
In accordance with the "Implementation Regulations of the Consumer Protection Law of the People's Republic of China", the Baiyun District Market Supervision Bureau issued a notice of rectification to the merchants involved, ordering the parties complained against to make corrections within a time limit. The goods sold must be marked with information such as the weight of gold and reminders to consumers.
Relevant staff of the Baiyun District Market Supervision Bureau stated that the product labels were not true and comprehensive, and the merchant involved did not proactively explain to Ms. Chen the weight of the "fixed price" gold, infringing on Ms. Chen's right to informed choice.
After mediation, the merchant involved agreed to Ms. Chen’s request for return and refund.
The Guangzhou Market Supervision Bureau reminds consumers:
● When purchasing precious goods such as gold and jewelry, no matter what pricing method is used, you can ask the merchant to indicate the key information of the goods such as price, weight, grade, and color on the transaction note;
● If you have any doubts about the weight, you can ask for a re-weighing on the spot to check it clearly before deciding whether to buy it;
● Properly keep transaction documents so that when disputes arise, you can provide sufficient evidence to restore the facts and safeguard your legitimate rights and interests.
If a consumer dispute cannot be negotiated, you can file a complaint through the "I want to complain" column of the Guangzhou Market Supervision Official Account or call the 12315/12345 hotline to file a complaint in a timely manner.
