Meizu, which is in the critical stage of rebirth, is trying hard to make the outside world know itself again.

Recently, during the 2024 ChinaJoy (China International Digital Interactive Entertainment Expo), Meizu COO Liao Qinghong further unveiled the mystery of Meizu's "car manufacturing plan".

Liao Qinghong was formerly a senior executive of Xiaopeng Motors. This was the first media exchange meeting he attended after joining Meizu in the first half of this year.

Liao Qinghong said that it is not convenient to disclose the specific model now, but it will definitely be built using Geely's latest platform and most advanced model. It will definitely be launched and delivered this year and will not be in the concept stage.

After Meizu launched the Flyme Auto smart cockpit operating system last year and announced that it would launch Meizu-branded cars, the industry believed that its “car-making” model might be similar to the “Huawei model”.

What is certain is that Meizu will not personally build cars at the moment, but will enter the automotive field as a supplier of intelligent car systems.

As we all know, the threshold for car manufacturing is high and the investment is huge. Liao Qinghong admitted that it is very difficult and challenging to obtain the qualification for car production now. So at least for now, we will rely on some models of the entire Geely system for deep customization, and regard car manufacturing as an opportunity rather than a huge risk to bet on.

In other words, the full-link car-making path that Lei Jun chose for Xiaomi is too heavy for Meizu.

In terms of cooperation with car companies, Meizu will also choose a lighter model.

Regarding the comparison between Meizu's automotive business model and Huawei's Hongmeng Intelligent Driving, Liao Qinghong revealed: "I think the cooperation between Hongmeng and car companies is a strategic cooperation. They want to build a car in depth, even the name of the car, and even the system of the car. I think this is a deep strategic cooperation."

Therefore, unlike Hongmeng Zhixing, Meizu StarJi will place a lower and more open position, and may be more like Huawei's HI solution model.

As Liao Qinghong said, Meizu's Flyme Auto smart cockpit operating system will be more open and will develop together with all car companies willing to cooperate.

However, at present, Flyme Auto is mainly installed on Geely models, such as Lynk & Co 08, Galaxy E5, Polestar 4 and other models.

Because it also has the genes for mobile phone manufacturing, Meizu is inevitably compared with Xiaomi and Huawei, in order to predict the prospects of Meizu if it chooses this path.

Obviously, as pioneers in the mobile phone industry entering the automotive industry, both Xiaomi and Huawei have been very successful in their first steps.

Liao Qinghong believes that the biggest advantage of Meizu is that it has the Flyme AIOS system, on which all products can be built and connected to form an ecosystem with horizontal experience. Huawei and Xiaomi can do this because of their Hongmeng system and Pengpai system.

Creating a full-scenario ecosystem is a market with more room for imagination than simply making mobile phones, and it has become a consensus among terminal equipment manufacturers today.

After Meizu was acquired by Star Era in 2022, the merged Star Era Meizu had to find a new path for future development.

Since last year, Meizu's strategy has become increasingly clear. It has made it clear that it will transform from a traditional mobile phone manufacturer to a cross-border full-stack intelligent terminal platform. It has begun to enter the automotive industry, hoping to organically integrate technologies and products in different fields such as mobile phones, XR and smart cars.

Meizu will seize any new opportunities brought by the industry. Facing the once-in-a-century revolutionary opportunity of AI big models, Meizu was the first mobile phone manufacturer to announce that it would stop the development of traditional smartphones and go all in on AI at the beginning of the year, with the goal of creating AI Device products, reconstructing the Flyme system and building an AI ecosystem.

It is reported that the multi-terminal integration scenario under the Meizu AI ecosystem is centered on the Flyme application model built on the three-party universal model and vertical domain knowledge base. Flyme AIOS, as the core operating system, empowers various application terminals including mobile phones, car machines and XR. Flyme Link is used as a link channel between terminals for ecological intercommunication.

This year, Meizu has repeatedly explained its thoughts on AI mobile phones and released related new products. In comparison, the car machine business is relatively mysterious. Liao Qinghong's sharing this time is the first time that Meizu has explained its development plan for its car business in detail.

As a latecomer in the intelligent car system, Meizu will accelerate its progress next.
