其实“水灵灵”一词最初源于韩国女子组合成员洪恩採（홍은채）在综艺节目中展示杂志封面的一句话：“这样看，我就在中间显得水灵灵的，周围都是可怕的姐姐。”（“可怕的姐姐”指的是组合中的其他成员，而洪恩採是组合中年龄最小的。）
The phrase "水灵灵" first popped up when Hong Eunchae, from a South Korean girl group, made a comment on a variety show while showing off a magazine cover: "Here I am, looking all fresh and lively, with my intimidating older sisters around me." (She playfully called the other group members 'intimidating older sisters,' since she's the youngest in the group.)

洪恩採在节目中使用的韩文本意中有“闪闪发光地”的意思。然而，该视频的中文译制组巧妙地将其翻译为“水灵灵”，在粉丝玩梗后流传甚广，慢慢出圈。以前说“年轻有活力”，现在统一“水灵灵”。
The Korean word Hong Eun Chae used in the program originally means "glittery". However, the Chinese translation team of the video cleverly translated it as "水灵灵" and it spread widely after fans played with the word. It used to be "young and energetic", but now it's commonly understood as "水灵灵".
