beijing news (reporter wu tingting, correspondent chen yi) in the five years since daxing airport was put into operation, the flight support measures of the daxing air traffic control center of the north china air traffic control bureau have been continuously upgraded. as of august 2024, more than 100,000 flights at daxing airport have used non-full runway takeoffs, saving a total of more than 44,000 kilometers of taxiing distance.
on may 25, 2023, the daxing air traffic control center began to promote non-full runway takeoffs at daxing airport. the average ground taxiing distance of aircraft can be shortened by about 500 meters. for daxing airport, which has four runways, both flight release efficiency and runway operation efficiency can be fully improved.
under normal conditions, a flight needs to use the full length of the runway for takeoff. "partial runway takeoff" refers to an operation method in which the aircraft fully utilizes the multiple taxiway entrances of the runway to enter the runway and uses the remaining runway for takeoff. it is reported that at present, in order to improve the efficiency of aircraft and runway use, more and more airports at home and abroad are using partial runway takeoff operations.
xiamen airlines captain xie di said that at daxing airport, aircraft taking off using a non-full runway can save 7 minutes compared to normal takeoff. "this is golden time during the peak hours of early departure flights. the taxiing distance is shortened, and fuel consumption and carbon emissions are reduced accordingly. over time, this will bring considerable energy savings to airlines."
in addition, from 2019 to 2024, the daxing air traffic control center will have many "firsts", such as the first airport in china with a cross-runway configuration, the first airport in china with a level 4 standard advanced ground guidance system, the first airport in china with a hud75 takeoff standard (pilots can take off with a runway visual range of 75 meters using a head-up display), and the first airport in china with a category b instrument landing (also known as blind landing) operation standard upon its opening.
the most dazzling of these advanced systems is the all-weather level 4 advanced ground guidance system (a-smgcs), which consists of 220,000 stop bar lights and taxiway centerline lights. this system provides pilots with a pair of "smart eyes" and can rely on lights to guide aircraft taxiing even in extremely low visibility. since its launch, the a-smgcs system has undergone 46 upgrades and has become a world-leading air traffic control automation system representing china's technological strength.
as of august 2024, the daxing air traffic control center has provided support for nearly 1.746 million flights of all types.
