in the era of electric vehicles, one of the most talked-about technologies is the active rear-wheel steering system akc (active kinematics control).

the akc system has been applied to models such as saic zhiji and dongfeng mengshi 917, and has been promoted in the field of new energy vehicles. because electric vehicles have a long wheelbase, rear-wheel steering technology is as important as air suspension to improve handling performance and driving comfort.

in the past two years, the new car-making forces have demonstrated the smooth control of "turning in one go", the precise reverse parking in the "devil's parking lot", and the "smoothness and stability" when turning at high speed and changing lanes to avoid obstacles at high speed. these are all thanks to akc rear-wheel steering.

at present, the most widely used system by domestic car manufacturers is the zf rear-wheel steering system. as one of the world's three largest auto parts suppliers, akc has sold a total of 1.9 million sets by the end of 2023, with a market share of more than 50% in both the global and chinese markets.

recently, domestic new energy vehicle manufacturers received good news - zf's domestically produced rear-wheel steering system (akc) has been mass-produced at the zhangjiagang base, achieving localization for the first time.

after less than two years of construction and production preparation, zf officially launched mass production this month, and the zhangjiagang base is the global debut of zf's akc technology outside of europe.

the mass-produced akc is zf's second-generation active rear-wheel steering technology, which has the advantages of compatibility and customization, and can greatly improve the chassis dynamics. mechanically, the steering mechanism is light in weight and has low space requirements, and can directly replace the tie rod in the suspension components, with a wide range of adaptability.

in terms of working principle, the akc system collects vehicle dynamic information in real time through the electronic control unit, and accurately controls the steering angle of the rear wheels to improve steering accuracy. at low speeds, the steering direction of the rear wheels is opposite to that of the front wheels, reducing the turning radius and improving flexibility. at high speeds, the steering direction of the rear wheels is consistent with that of the front wheels, improving driving stability.

zf's second-generation akc rear wheel steering angle can achieve a maximum single-sided steering angle output of +/-12°, which is especially beneficial for electric vehicles with a longer wheelbase.

the localization of the akc system is expected to further reduce costs. eventually, more and more new energy vehicle manufacturers will choose to install it. in particular, the addition of the can communication electrical interface further improves compatibility and can be expanded to heavy-duty vehicles such as pickup trucks and heavy-duty full-size suvs.
