Recently, COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry completed the installation of 35-meter-high foldable marine rotor sails on the large ore carrier "Camellia Dream" in Zhoushan, and successfully completed its maiden voyage and docked at Cape Madria, Brazil. This is not only the first project in China to implement the installation of 35-meter-high foldable marine rotor sails in a horizontal manner, but also the first time that such green technology has been used in capesize bulk carriers around the world, setting a new milestone for ship energy conservation and emission reduction.
The "Camellia Dream" is 299.94 meters long, 50 meters wide and 24.7 meters deep. It is a 200,000-ton bulk carrier that transports iron ore. The main repairs for the ship in Zhoushan COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry include the installation of two 35-meter-high foldable marine rotor sails and 10-year special inspections.
The rotor sail is a device installed on the ship deck that uses offshore wind energy to generate auxiliary thrust. It is composed of core components such as a rotatable lightweight outer cylinder, a supporting inner tower, a base, a drive and transmission device, and a control system. It has the advantages of good energy saving, intelligent operation, safety and reliability. Compared with the previous walking and fixed rotor sails, the folding rotor sail is more advanced in design, with a hydraulic folding and automatic adjustment system, which enables it to be adaptively adjusted according to different environments and ship operating conditions, thereby improving energy efficiency.

It is understood that after installing foldable rotor sails, the "Camellia Dream" can reduce the carbon emissions of the main engine by 6% to 10% under different operating conditions, significantly improving the fuel economy of the entire ship, which provides an efficient energy solution for the green and low-carbon transformation of the shipping industry.
"This is the first time that our company has undertaken a rotor sail installation project. From the beginning of the project, the company has attached great importance to it." According to Ma Jian, the single ship manager of Zhoushan COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry Co., Ltd., from the early production preparation to the later planning of the overall lifting of the sections and the base, sufficient discussions and special deployments were carried out for each link and each node, and a detailed construction plan was sorted out and formulated. Sufficient preparations were made in terms of quality and safety, technical processes, and material support, laying a solid foundation for the smooth promotion of the project modification.
The horizontal installation method adopted by the "Camellia Dream" is the first in China, which undoubtedly poses an unprecedented challenge to installation accuracy and operating skills. The docking of the 100 holes on the rotor sail with the base must reach millimeter-level accuracy, which is not only related to the stable operation of the rotor sail, but also directly affects the maximization of the wind boost effect during its operation. The successful modification of the "Camellia Dream" is not only a major breakthrough in Zhoushan's green ship repair and modification field, but also a strong impetus for the green and low-carbon development of the global shipping industry.
