Xinhua News Agency, Lhasa, August 25 (Reporters Liu Zhoupeng and Wei Guanyu) In the early morning of August 25, Tsering Lhamo, principal of Nagqu Special Education School, welcomed students returning to school at the school gate. The new semester has arrived as scheduled.
Nagqu Special Education School was established in 2013 and is the first special education school in Nagqu, Tibet. Having worked at the school for 11 years, Tsering Lhamo has witnessed the development of special education in Nagqu from scratch to excellence.
In the 11 years since the school was founded, the number of students and the types of students admitted have continued to increase, and special education has received more and more attention from parents and students. Parent Jue Qiong said that his child will be a senior high school student in the new semester.
Before the start of the school term, Principal Tsering Lhamo held a seminar on school management ideas in Lhasa, attended by more than 300 primary and secondary school, preschool and special education workers from all over Tibet. "In special schools, children can not only learn, but also learn well. We must create a more inclusive, equal and high-quality learning environment for students," said Tsering Lhamo.
Data from the 2023 Tibet Autonomous Region Disability Development Bulletin shows that there are 1,057 disabled students enrolled in seven special education schools in the region, 4,597 disabled students attending regular schools, 2,600 disabled students benefiting from home-based teaching services, and the enrollment rate of disabled students in compulsory education remains above 97%.
Gu Ru, a 28-year-old art teacher with five years of teaching experience, taught her first art class in the new school year. She said that many children in her class have difficulty with fine motor skills due to cerebral palsy, and fine operations such as drawing lines and making things by hand in art class are an important part of students' rehabilitation training.
Gu Ru had students make animal characters using super light clay, and the finished works were posted at the back of the classroom.
The 15-year-old Qi Meicijia drew a little black rabbit that he saw by chance while grazing on the hillside. "I like running on the hill, as fast as a rabbit, and I want to be an athlete," Qi Meicijia said.
Data from the Tibet Autonomous Region Disabled Persons Employment Service Center show that as of now, 21,048 certified disabled people of working age have found employment in the region. As a disabled person herself, Gu Ruo empathizes with the students' difficulties. In 2019, she took a train to teach in the northern Tibetan grasslands, which have an average altitude of more than 4,000 meters.
"Many students come back to school to see me. They can face life and work with strength," said Gu Ru.
Zhuzha, 24, is one of the first batch of students at Naqu Special Education School. In 2016, Zhuzha successfully passed the college entrance examination for the blind and was admitted to Nanjing Special Education Normal College. After graduation, he chose to give back to the special education cause and came to work at Naqu Second Special Education School.
The establishment of Naqu No. 2 Special Education School in May 2022 marks a new stage in the development of classified school-running in Naqu’s special education: Naqu No. 2 Special School focuses on educating deaf-mute and visually impaired children, and Naqu Special School has become a special education school for children with intellectual disabilities.
Renduo, a visually impaired student at the Naqu City No. 2 Special Education School, returned to school early. In art class, the teacher told her about a scene in a painting by a shepherdess. "I grew up in a pastoral area and slept with a newborn lamb in my arms. I could feel its trembling and temperature, just as the teacher described," Renduo said.
