At the end of May this year, BYD's fifth-generation DM technology was released and mass-produced, which attracted widespread attention in the market, marking another breakthrough in the field of plug-in hybrid vehicles. Its first models, Qin L DM-i and Haibao 06 DM-i, also achieved monthly sales of 20,100 and 14,000 units in June (data source: China Passenger Car Association).
On August 17, BYD held a fifth-generation DM technology analysis meeting in Jinan, where senior engineers from BYD Automotive New Technology Research Institute comprehensively analyzed the technical innovations of the fifth-generation DM.
Fifth Generation DM Technology Analysis Conference-Jinan Station
It is understood that the reason why the fifth-generation DM technology can achieve excellent results of 46.06% thermal efficiency of mass-produced engines, 2.9L fuel consumption under NEDC conditions, and 2,100 kilometers of comprehensive cruising range is entirely due to its strong technical foundation provided by its electric power architecture, full-temperature range vehicle thermal management architecture, and intelligent electric integrated electronic and electrical architecture.
Specifically, the EHS hybrid system increases power density by 70.28% through its ultimate structural design, significantly reduces energy flow path losses, and achieves an overall operating efficiency of 92%. The plug-in hybrid blade battery increases energy density by 15.9% while ensuring safety, providing a solid guarantee for vehicle endurance.
In addition, the fifth-generation thermal management architecture has risen to the same level of importance as the power architecture, from the original independent systems to the height of the overall architecture. It consists of front cabin thermal management, battery thermal management, and cabin thermal management, working together to ensure the lowest energy consumption. This architecture allows the vehicle to save up to 10% of energy consumption in high temperature environments and up to 8% in low temperature environments, ensuring a dual experience of energy saving and comfort.
In terms of intelligent electric fusion electronic and electrical architecture, the fifth-generation DM technology integrates the industry's first plug-in hybrid power domain control seven-in-one, realizing functional reuse and increasing power density by 18.3%. The industry's first chip integration realizes the integration of VCU (voltage control unit) and dual MCU (motor control unit), and the chip computing power is increased by 146%, fully improving the integration and performance of the entire vehicle.
Innovative three major architectures to achieve ultimate pursuit
After the meeting, the Qin L DM-i and Haibao 06 DM-i were tested for fuel consumption per 100 kilometers. The total mileage of this test was 122 kilometers, with urban roads accounting for about 30% and highways accounting for about 70%. The SOC condition for power loss was not less than 15%. Starting from the Olympic Sports Gas Station on Jingshi Road, passing through the Jiangshuiquan Tunnel, Guanzhuang Traffic Control Office, and Cailong Road on Tourism Road, and finally returning to the starting point to fill up the gas, the actual fuel consumption was obtained. In the end, the fuel consumption test results at the Jinan station were as low as 2.4L and as high as 2.84L, all below 2.9L, which once again confirmed the true strength of the fifth-generation DM technology.
