Obbe Vermeij, a former programmer of the GTA series, recently shared an interesting story about in-game garbage on social media. He has participated in the development of GTA 3, GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas and GTA 4.
Vermeij mentioned that the streets of GTA 3 were too clean, so he decided to add garbage elements. Initially, the garbage was just a simple rectangle that occasionally moved with the wind and could be dragged by passing vehicles. The art team designed four textures for the garbage: two newspapers and two leaves.
In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, there was a mission called "Dildo Dodo" where players had to scatter flyers for the Candy Suxx show. From that point on, one of the four grunge textures was replaced with the flyer. The grunge animation was to move along the ground, bouncing up and down when it encountered wind. Due to the limitations of line scan technology at the time, the grunge would sometimes penetrate the map. Not all team members liked this grunge system.
Vermeij eventually removed the trash from the streets of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas because he lost an argument with other members of the development team. He also revealed that some Grand Theft Auto developers, including himself, helped out in the final months of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City development. He ported the trash code from Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
