Minecraft began its journey to block domination during its Early Access period in 2009, and has made its way to nearly every gaming platform from Xbox and PlayStation to 3DS and PS Vita. Now, an independent developer is using Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 as a basis to make his own block-based game on GameCube and Dreamcast.

Developer Meesedev is making a "Minecraft-style" game for older consoles, and is building a custom engine from scratch to do it. But for now, they're using Minecraft assets and game mechanics to show off the engine's capabilities, and judging by the clip below, you can barely tell the difference.

"Crammed 25 million blocks into 24MB of RAM & bumped render distance to 12 blocks on GameCube, now surpassing Minecraft render distance on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U & matches Nintendo Switch (docked mode). All achieved after a month of extensive optimization," the developer recently tweeted.

"Chunk" here refers to Mojang's very specific unit of measurement, referring to a 16 x 16 block spawn segment, rather than edible chunks of meat or chunky pixels. For example, the next-gen Xbox Series and PS5 versions render at around 30 chunks, which makes this demake even more incredible.

For the sake of clarity, once the unnamed game is finally ready for the public, all Minecraft elements "will be removed and replaced with original content." "You don't hit trees with your fists," Meesedev said. "The only similarity is that it's a block game set in nature. Being original means the gameplay has to be completely different to ensure this project doesn't go to waste."
