[ASEAN Hotline] China and Laos deepen cross-border medical cooperation

Xishuangbanna, August 7 (China News Service) (Reporter Miao Chao) "Thank you Chinese doctors!" On the 7th, Mo Li (transliteration), a Laotian boy suffering from chronic intracranial hemorrhage, was cured and discharged from the People's Hospital of Mengla County, Xishuangbanna Prefecture. He specially learned this Chinese sentence to thank the Chinese doctors.

Xishuangbanna Prefecture in Yunnan Province, located in the southwestern border of China, borders Laos. In recent years, the two sides have continuously deepened cross-border medical cooperation.

13-year-old Mo Li lives in Mengxai, Laos. Not long ago, she accidentally hit her head and fainted for a short time. After waking up, she was listless and fainted again a few days later. Due to the limited local medical level and equipment capacity, the cause of the disease could not be found. After urgently contacting Mengla County People's Hospital, Mo Li was quickly transferred to China for treatment through the green channel for critically ill patients entering the country at the China-Laos Mohan Port.

"The doctor performed a minimally invasive surgery on Moli and removed the blood clots." Song Zhangwen, a Lao translator at Mengla County People's Hospital, told reporters that there are many Lao patients like Moli in the hospital.

Tao Xian, 76, who lives in Nantha, Laos, had a heart attack not long ago. The local hospital in Nantha was unable to treat him, so an ambulance was sent to Mengla County People's Hospital for emergency treatment. Currently, Tao Xian's condition has stabilized and he will be discharged from the hospital after his anemia symptoms are relieved.

Zhang Xueyan, director of Mengla County People's Hospital, introduced that in 2013, Xishuangbanna Prefecture and Laos established a medical and health service community with medical institutions, and later gradually formed a cross-border medical cooperation mechanism.

In 2015, the China-Laos Mohan Port opened a green channel for critically ill patients to enter the country for treatment, simplifying the patient entry process and saving entry time; in 2022 and 2023, Mengla County People's Hospital signed cooperation agreements with Nantha Provincial Hospital, Phongsali Provincial Hospital, Mengxing County Hospital, Menglong County Hospital, etc. in Laos to carry out exchanges and cooperation in patient referral, hospital management, personnel exchange, specialty capacity building, technical training and talent training.

Zhang Xueyan said that in 2023, Mengla County People's Hospital received more than 3,570 Lao patients, including more than 350 inpatients. "The number of Lao patients is increasing, and we are expanding the number of Lao translators to provide better services for Lao patients." (End)
