In 2022, Apple agreed to pay a $50 million settlement to certain eligible 2015-2019 MacBook users due to problems with their butterfly keyboards. The claims process was launched in late 2022, and the settlement was finally approved in May last year. Starting today, eligible MacBook users are finally receiving their payouts.

Apple introduced the butterfly keyboard on the all-new 12-inch MacBook in 2015, later expanding it to the MacBook Pro in 2016 and the MacBook Air in 2018. However, the keyboard design has proven to be problematic and has had reliability and durability issues. Some of these issues include sticky keys, repeating characters, or the complete inability to type certain characters.

Apple finally ditched the butterfly keyboard on the 16-inch MacBook Pro in late 2019. By mid-2020, the 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air also switched to the new Magic Keyboard. However, this is not the end of the story for Apple.

In May 2018, discussions around a class action lawsuit began, with users stating that the butterfly keyboard was "inoperable and unfit for its normal and intended use." Throughout 2019, the lawsuit progressed, with a judge requiring Apple to face a class action lawsuit. In mid-2022, Apple was required to pay a $50 million settlement.
