Self-driving cars are gradually becoming part of people's daily lives. As a safety net for self-driving cars, the role of safety officers has emerged. Safety officers need to predict risks during driving and intervene manually when necessary. In the early stages of self-driving car testing, safety officers are the last resort.

Zhu Yulong has been working as a safety officer for three years, and he is considered one of the first batch of driverless safety officers in China. Real-time monitoring and recording of potential problems of autonomous vehicles during driving have always been the focus of his work. The problems recorded and described by the safety officers have become an important basis for backend programmers to improve logic and patch algorithms, and to some extent, have helped driverless vehicles continue to grow and improve during testing.

Shanghai currently has four main test areas for driverless cars, namely Jiading, Fengxian, Lingang and Jinqiao. In the Lingang test area of about 68 square kilometers, the Robotaxi that will be put on the road in the future will change from "main driver with safety officer" to "co-driver with safety officer", and the test will be free of charge throughout the entire process.
