Mercedes-Benz receives approval to conduct L4 city and highway autonomous driving tests in Beijing

IT Home reported on August 2 that Mercedes-Benz announced today that it has become the first international automaker to be approved to conduct L4 urban and highway autonomous driving tests in Beijing.


It is reported that L4 vehicles can complete most driving tasks in different scenarios autonomously without the need for a driver to take over, and have the following characteristics:

  • The test vehicle is equipped with a variety of sensors

  • Equipped with redundant system to further enhance safety

  • On busy urban roads, easily complete parking spaces, U-turns, driving in and out of roundabouts, unprotected left turns, etc.

  • On highways, the system can automatically change lanes when the vehicle ahead slows down, automatically pass through toll booths, etc.

  • In extreme cases, implement the minimum risk strategy and find a safe place to dock on your own.


IT Home noticed that Mercedes-Benz has become the world's first commercial vehicle company to achieve L3 autonomous driving in Europe and the United States, and last year became one of the first companies approved to conduct L3 highway road tests in Beijing.

Mercedes-Benz previously stated that since 2021, the company has been continuously improving system performance through closed-field testing and verification in China. The focus of local R&D work includes enabling the system toAdapt to special lanes such as Chinese signs and markings, construction zones, bus lanes, and tidal lanes, and continuously optimize the logic, algorithms and parameters of scenarios such as lane cutting.

In Germany, Mercedes-Benz's "hometown", models such as the S-Class and EQS pure electric sedan already have optional L3 autonomous driving systems, which allow drivers to enable L3 conditional autonomous driving mode at speeds of up to 60km/h on German highways of appropriate width during rush hour or congestion.
