Our reporter Wen Chong and Yu Jianping from Beijing reported

While the controversy over “weekly sales” has not yet faded, the “monthly sales” of new energy vehicles have been announced.

On August 1, many auto brands announced their sales in July 2024. According to incomplete statistics from the China Times reporter, among the 12 new energy vehicle brands that have announced their sales, including BYD and Ideal, half of the brands achieved a substantial year-on-year double-digit growth, but the month-on-month growth slowed down. No brand increased by more than 10% month-on-month, and more than half showed a flat or declining trend.

At the same time, the reporter also found that compared with last month, the "pattern" of the new energy vehicle market has stabilized. Except for the swap between NIO and Leapmotor, the rankings of other brands have not changed. Among them, BYD is still far ahead, with a record sales of 342,000 units that month; the highly-watched Ideal Auto ranks second, with monthly sales returning to 50,000 units and a record high monthly delivery volume.

Multiple brands set new records

BYD is undoubtedly still the first. In July, BYD's sales hit a new high, reaching 342,383 units, a year-on-year increase of 30.6% and a month-on-month increase of 0.2%. Among them, 30,014 passenger cars were exported, Dynasty and Ocean sold 328,178 units, Denza sold 10,340 units, Yangwang sold 439 units, and Fangchengbao sold 1,842 units.

As of the end of July, BYD's cumulative sales of new energy vehicles this year have approached the 2 million mark, reaching 1.955 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 28.83%. BYD has now completed more than half of its annual sales target, with a completion rate of 54%.

The second place is Ideal Auto, which broke the record again in July this year with 51,000 vehicles delivered, a year-on-year increase of 49.4% and a month-on-month increase of 6.8%, after breaking the 50,000 vehicles mark for the first time in December last year. It is worth noting that as of July 31, Ideal Auto has delivered a total of 873,000 vehicles. Based on the current monthly sales and growth rate, it is expected to exceed 1 million vehicles within the year.

Li Xiang, Chairman and CEO of Ideal Auto, said: "Since the launch of Ideal NOA, users' attention and recognition of intelligent driving technology have increased significantly. In July, the proportion of NOA test drives in stores doubled, and the order volume of AD Max models equipped with NOA function increased significantly." In addition, Ideal Auto's new autonomous driving technology architecture based on end-to-end models, VLM visual language models and world models also began to be pushed to thousands of test users at the end of July.

Hongmeng Zhixing once again announced the combined sales of Wenjie and Zhijie, with a total of 44,090 vehicles delivered in July, a 4.4% drop from 46,141 vehicles in the previous month. Among them, Wenjie delivered 41,535 vehicles that month and Zhijie delivered 2,555 vehicles, both of which fell month-on-month. It is worth noting that on the same day, Wenjie announced the news that it had delivered its 400,000th vehicle in 28 months. Wenjie said: "Let the fastest growth record of new power brands continue to accelerate."

After falling below 40,000 last month, Aion's delivery data in July continued to decline by 21.7% year-on-year, and it was the only brand among the 12 auto brands included in the statistics to experience a year-on-year decline. In July, Aion's global sales volume was 35,238 units, and the gap between it and Ideal and Wenjie has not narrowed.

In July, Leapmotor's sales exceeded 20,000 again, with 22,093 vehicles delivered, up 54.1% year-on-year and 9.8% month-on-month. Officials said that Leapmotor C16 received more than 10,000 orders in the first month of its launch, and deliveries started across the country, helping to boost Leapmotor's sales.

It is worth mentioning that Leapmotor's reverse joint venture overseas expansion plan is gradually advancing. On July 30, Leapmotor International shipped the first batch of Leapmotor C10 and T03 electric vehicles from Shanghai Port to Europe. From the fourth quarter of 2024, Leapmotor International will also launch C10 and T03 models in the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific and South American markets.

NIO has maintained monthly sales of 20,000 vehicles for three consecutive months, with 20,498 vehicles delivered in July, the same as 20,463 vehicles in the same period last year, and a month-on-month decline of 3.4%. "Since May, we have achieved a monthly sales volume of 20,000 vehicles, and it seems that this level is relatively stable at present," said Qin Lihong, co-founder and president of NIO, to a reporter from the China Times.

20,000 vehicles watershed

20,000 vehicles has become the watershed that divides the upper and lower half of new energy vehicle sales and rankings. Among the brands with less than 20,000 vehicles, Zeekr Auto, Xpeng Auto, Nezha Auto, and Xiaomi Auto delivered more than 10,000 vehicles, and Zhiji Auto and Lantu Auto delivered more than 6,000 vehicles.

Specifically, in July, Zeekr Auto delivered 15,655 vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 30%, but a month-on-month decrease of 22.1%. Along with the monthly sales, there was also news that Zeekr Auto had delivered more than 300,000 vehicles, which was placed on the headlines of the official Weibo account, above the monthly sales, showing the brand's emphasis on this achievement that took 33 months to achieve. Zeekr Auto called it "the starting point for Zeekr to continue climbing to higher peaks."

Xiaopeng Motors, Nezha Motors and Xiaomi Motors, whose sales volume is between 10,000 and 11,000 units, have maintained a relatively stable slow growth trend. Among them, Xiaopeng Motors delivered 11,145 vehicles in July, a year-on-year increase of 1% and a month-on-month increase of 4%. Nezha Motors delivered 11,015 vehicles in July, a year-on-year and month-on-month increase of 9.7% and 7.9% respectively. Xiaomi Motors officially stated that in July, the delivery volume of Xiaomi SU7 exceeded 10,000 units, and the delivery volume will continue to exceed 10,000 in August.

According to statistics from the China Times, more than 35,000 Xiaomi SU7s have been delivered since they were first delivered in April. Lei Jun, founder of Xiaomi Group, previously revealed: "We expect to complete the annual delivery target of 100,000 vehicles ahead of schedule in early November."

The sales of Zhiji Auto and Lantu Auto in July were very close, delivering 6,017 and 6,015 vehicles respectively. Zhiji Auto grew 249% year-on-year and remained the same as last month; Lantu Auto grew 76% year-on-year and 9.2% month-on-month. Liu Tao, co-CEO of Zhiji Auto, said that in terms of pure price comparison, Zhiji L6/LS6 may not be as good as some competitors, but its price-to-intelligence, quality-to-price ratio and configuration-to-price ratio are unique in the 200,000 yuan price range.

It is reported that Zhiji Auto has launched the "Test Drive in High-precision Map City NOA" in its stores across the country in July. At present, "a large number of users have come to the store to experience IM AD City NOA and feel the intelligent driving travel of Zhiji 6 Series Gemini that "understands Chinese roads better." Zhiji told the reporter of "Huaxia Times".

Overcapacity of new energy is a false proposition

Whether it is the volume of new energy vehicles that has exceeded 30 million, or BYD with monthly sales of 342,000 vehicles, Ideal Auto that has exceeded the 50,000 mark, or Zeekr and Wenjie that have just reached 300,000 and 400,000 vehicles, all show that the development of the new energy vehicle industry has entered a new stage of "large-scale" development.

With the continuous increase in volume and market share, the development of new energy vehicles in my country is also facing malicious speculation and even slander. On July 30, Zhao Zenglian, deputy director of the General Administration of Customs, responded at a press conference of the State Council Information Office: "Some time ago, some arguments hyped the so-called overcapacity of my country's new energy industry. This is actually a 'false proposition', which is neither practical nor in line with the laws of market economic development."

The International Energy Agency estimates that by 2030, global electric vehicle sales will reach about 45 million. "This figure is equivalent to three times the global sales in 2023 and five times China's production. my country's new energy products are not only not in excess, but have enriched the global green supply and contributed to the global response to climate change," said Zhao Zenglian.

In addition, my country's new energy vehicles have also encountered the "small courtyard high wall" built by trade protectionism internationally, but China's new energy supply chain is "solid as a rock" and has leading technological and price advantages, and its development prospects are unstoppable.

Zhao Zenglian said: "Green has become the distinctive background color of my country's high-quality development of foreign trade. Four out of every 10 cars exported by my country are electric vehicles, seven out of every 10 rail locomotives are electric locomotives, and nearly 90% of exported batteries are lithium batteries."

Zhao Zenglian also pointed out that my country's total trade in goods has ranked first in the world for seven consecutive years, and has become the main trading partner of more than 150 countries and regions. The number of foreign trade enterprises has nearly doubled compared with 2012. Among them, the export of high-tech, high-value-added and green products such as automobiles, integrated circuits and lithium batteries in 2023 increased by 7.3 times, 1.8 times and 15.2 times respectively compared with 2012.

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, from January to June 2024, China exported 2.793 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 30.5%. China has become the world's largest automobile exporter for two consecutive years, 780,000 vehicles higher than Japan (2.01 million vehicles), which ranked second.
