the fifth generation inheritor of pinggu diao dagu, an intangible cultural heritage of beijing

my name is li kewen. i am a villager in qigezhuang village, wangxinzhuang town, pinggu district. i am also the fifth generation inheritor of pinggu diao dagu, an intangible cultural heritage in beijing. in 2013, i was fortunate enough to see a performance by mr. du runqi live. his voice was high-pitched and melodious, and the audience applauded for a long time. this performance moved me, firstly because of its extremely high artistry, and secondly because i regret that this art has almost been lost. so, i came up with the idea of learning. at that time, there were four other people who apprenticed with me. i was the youngest and was called "the fifth girl" by my master. master gave everyone a usb flash drive, which contained audio works sung by master. after i became a disciple, master left me alone and gave me a long, thin object wrapped in a black plastic bag. i opened it and saw that it was a handmade drum stand. although the craftsmanship is very rough and it can be seen at a glance that it is a handmade product, i can feel master's expectations for me. later, my uncle told me that in order to make this drum set, my master climbed three mountains and found an ash tree on a mountain in huying village. he specially selected branches as thick as a finger and cut them off, then went home and peeled and polished them. the bent parts are baked straight, painted, drilled, and strung together with strings. from then on, whenever i encountered difficulties, i would look at the drum set master made for me. when i thought of master's expectations for me, i was not afraid of anything. i secretly vowed to continue learning. i was over 40 years old when i became a disciple. i couldn't change many of my habits and my limbs were not coordinated. to learn pinggu diao dagu, drumming skills are the first level. the copper plate is played with the left hand and the drum is played with the right hand. the two cannot be played together. sometimes the copper plate is played once and the drum is played three times. when i first started learning, i always had trouble reacting. i would either hit the copper plate in my hand or drop it on the ground. so, i kept practicing with the copper plate in hand, and i practiced while walking. my hands were calloused and patinated, and i didn’t dare to stretch out my hands when eating, for fear of being laughed at.

the formula i learned at that time was: ruler-beng-chi-beng-chi-beng-beng. "chi" refers to the copper plate, and "beng" refers to the drum. when you first learn, you always have to think about it in your mind, what does "chi" mean and what does "beng" mean. so, when i was coaching my apprentices, i changed this formula to "ban-gu-ban-gu-ban-gu-he", which made it easier to remember. according to the melody and the memorized formula, you can quickly type out the song.
