today is mr. lu xun’s birthday. he was born on september 25, 1881.
i rarely care about celebrities' birthdays, but i still feel that it is necessary and meaningful to commemorate mr. lu xun's birthday. after all, for a writer like me, his influence is far-reaching and huge.
during high school and college, i read the most and most frequently lu xun's articles, and i once deliberately imitated him when writing articles. since i was 16 years old and started high school, i often secretly checked what lu xun was doing when he was about my age, and how many years it would take for him to write a famous article, to encourage myself. in college, i wrote some small and fragmentary articles, deliberately imitating him, but my knowledge was so far behind that my imitations were not very similar. later, i became a reporter and did news, and my writing became more and more news-oriented. i tried to say what i knew and had been confirmed to a limited extent, and rarely expressed my personal attitude. my writing style became worse and worse.
but deep down, i still admire mr. li. since i went to college, i have read many people's articles or books. most of the books of others will never be read again after reading, but mr. li's books can be read again and again. after reading them till now, i found that when i was young, i read mr. li's papers full of daggers. now that i am middle-aged and reading them again, i suddenly see some other meanings.
when i first read mr. lu xun in my early years, they were just some scattered chapters in the chinese textbook. unlike many young literary people, i was not interested in novels and essays such as "the true story of ah q", "xianglin's wife", "kong yiji", "young runtu", and "from the baicao garden to sanwei bookstore". instead, i liked articles like "in memory of liu hezhen", "on the collapse of leifeng pagoda again", and "on the surprise of friendly nations", and i often applauded because of their sharpness.
the teacher said: the author of a battle should focus on "debate". if a poet is angry and laughs and scolds because of uncontrollable emotion, it is naturally fine, but he must stop at laughing and scolding, and "laughter, anger and scolding can all become articles", so that the enemy is injured or killed, without himself doing anything despicable, and the audience does not think it is dirty. this is the ability of the author of a battle.
these words left such a deep impression on me that i could not help imitating them. in addition to my professional writing, i occasionally write some short articles that are deeply influenced by mr. lu's writing style.
in the early autumn of 1999, when i was a sophomore, i posted several articles on the wall in front of the second canteen of hubei university, which was specially used for students to express their opinions. i discussed with a senior from the chinese department what "humanities" meant. the senior was the head of the humanities forum of hubei university at that time. the humanities forum often invited some celebrities to give lectures. it was a well-known student club in the school and even in hubei universities. maybe he was popular and had many people to help him. i was alone and fought against the senior and his helpers for several days.
after three or five days of verbal sparring on the wall, mr. rao shengkai from the youth league committee of the college came to talk to me and advised me to call a truce.
i still remember his exact words: chu chaoxin, the student debate you caused has created the best student atmosphere at hubei university in the past decade. but that’s enough, don’t write any more.
a few years ago, i accompanied the beauty of our college of humanities back to school to visit professor rao. he was working as a secretary in the school's logistics department at the time and he no longer remembered me, nor did he remember the student debate and the words he had used to persuade me more than ten years ago.
this incident had a big impact on campus at the time. i took martial arts as an elective, and one day during physical education class, the physical education teacher suddenly stood in front of the queue and asked: "who is chu chaoxin? stand up."
i stepped out of the line, at a loss. the teacher said: i read the article you posted at the entrance of the second canteen. it's well written. keep it up...
maybe it’s because i was rarely praised since i was a child, and the occasional praise i received will last me for half my life.
the style, tone and wording of the articles at that time were mostly intentional imitations of the gentleman's. although the imitation was not quite similar, it was still able to touch some people.
the character i have developed over the past half of my life is probably closely related to mr. changdu's articles. at the turn of spring and summer in 2020, i wrote an article criticizing a media outlet that once had a good reputation. some of the trolls living in the media said that i was "always extreme." in addition to saying that i was "extreme," the trolls probably also said some unpleasant things about me behind my back. i can understand them very well. some of the articles hurt them, so of course they would think that i was not tolerant or gentle enough.
most people who take mr. lu xun as their role model have probably been labeled as "extreme" and "mean". i have been labeled as such many times in recent years, but i never feel ashamed of it and always feel proud of it.
perhaps mr. chang du was too deeply "poisoned". in recent years, even though he knew the environment was dangerous, he still couldn't help but stand up and say a few words. he was even prepared to pay some price and make some sacrifices. as you can see, he has "sacrificed" several times in recent years. there are countless other sacrifices that are invisible to the naked eye, and he has never regretted it.
whenever i feel depressed and powerless, i will flip through mr. lu xun's books. mr. lu xun's articles can be read frequently and are always new.
i have bought some of mr. lu xun's books in the past, but most of them were lost during the years of wandering without a fixed place to live. at the end of the year before last, i moved into a new house and bought another batch. since i bought them, i can't put them in the bookcase as decoration. although i have read many of his articles and books, i can't help but pick them up and read them again.
what is surprising is that when i read the works of mr. lu xun again in middle age, i actually saw the painstaking efforts of other mr. lu xun.
in the complete works of lu xun's essays, there is an article written by mr. lu xun in xiamen on october 30, 1926. the article says: if someone hates you when you speak, it is a kind of happiness compared to no movement. there are many people in the world who are uncomfortable, but some people are wholeheartedly creating a comfortable world for themselves. this is not so easy, and they should also put something hateful in front of them... the gentleman said: why don't you scold the warlords who kill without blinking an eye? this is also cowardly! but i don't want to be fooled by these traps. the words of the gentleman quoted above are just a soft knife. if you suffer a literary disaster, do you think he will respect you as a martyr? no, there will be another kind of sarcastic talk at that time.
as mentioned before, i rarely paid attention to literary works such as novels in the past, and most of my attention was focused on essays like sharp blades. however, over the years, i have only seen papers full of "daggers and javelins", and never paid attention to the teacher's reminder "don't be fooled by baiting and killing".
this is probably the change that time brings to people. mr.'s articles have always been there, but i didn't pay attention to them when i was young and energetic. now that i have been wandering in the world for more than 20 years and have white hair on my temples, i have noticed the reminder of "don't fall into the trap of killing".
mr. wang's articles are always new to me. in another decade or two, when i read them again when i am old and gray, i will probably be able to read some other "new ideas" that have existed for many years.
i write this short article to commemorate mr.
