joint statement on the establishment of strategic partnership between the people's republic of china and the democratic republic of sao tome and principe

at the invitation of xi jinping, president of the people's republic of china, patrice trovoada, prime minister of the democratic republic of sao tome and principe, attended the beijing summit of the forum on china-africa cooperation held in beijing from september 4 to 7, 2024 and paid an official visit to the people's republic of china.

during the visit, premier li qiang of the state council of the people's republic of china held talks with prime minister trovoada. in a friendly, frank and trusting atmosphere, the two sides exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern and reached broad consensus. the two countries also signed a number of agreements and documents aimed at deepening friendly cooperation between china and sao tome and principe.

1. both sides agreed that the rapid development of china-sao tome and principe relations in recent years has set an example of friendly coexistence, mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation between large and small countries. in order to further enhance political mutual trust and promote cooperation in various fields, both sides announced that they would upgrade their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership.

2. the two sides will continue to firmly support each other on issues concerning each other's core interests and major concerns. china appreciates and supports sao tome and principe's independent choice of a development path that suits its national conditions and its efforts to develop and revitalize. sao tome and principe reiterated its firm adherence to the one-china principle, believing that there is only one china in the world, taiwan is an inalienable part of china's territory, and the government of the people's republic of china is the only legitimate government representing all of china. it firmly opposes any form of "taiwan independence" and external forces interfering in china's internal affairs. it reiterates that it will not have any form of official exchanges with taiwan and firmly supports all efforts made by the chinese government to achieve national reunification. sao tome and principe reiterated its support for china's position on issues related to hong kong, xinjiang, tibet, and the sea.
