ouyang minggao said that new energy vehicles have solved the problem of power electrification so far, but this is still not enough for energy conservation and emission reduction. the root of the development of new energy vehicles lies in the green transformation of energy. only by realizing the new energy revolution and using green electricity can it be called a real new energy vehicle. for china, high-energy-density all-solid-state batteries and low-cost, long-life lithium-ion batteries are equally important to china's power battery industry, and a dual-wheel drive is required.
"so far, new energy vehicles have solved the problem of power electrification, but this is still not enough for energy conservation and emission reduction. the root of the development of new energy vehicles lies in the green transformation of energy. only when the new energy revolution is realized and green electricity is used for energy can it be called a real new energy vehicle." on august 31, ouyang minggao, academician of the chinese academy of sciences and professor of tsinghua university, said at the 20th china automotive industry development (teda) international forum.

"in order to use green electricity, the power battery industry will move to the western region with abundant renewable energy, which will be an important choice for the development of china's battery industry." ouyang minggao suggested, "in the field of automobile manufacturing, from the perspective of manufacturing energy consumption, by transferring power battery production capacity from the southeast coastal areas with a lack of renewable energy resources to the northwest region with relatively abundant renewable energy resources, or through distributed solar energy, wind energy and other forms to promote emission reduction at the manufacturing end; in terms of manufacturing materials, by using carbon fiber materials and other methods, we can promote the lightweighting of automobiles and reduce automobile energy consumption, thereby promoting carbon emission reduction and increasing carbon sinks."
in addition, ouyang minggao also reviewed the development history of china's power batteries. he believes that my country's power batteries are experiencing three important "decades", with the research focuses on safe batteries, smart batteries, and solid-state batteries. "2000-2030 is a complete technology cycle. in the first decade, power began to be implemented, mainly facing safety issues; the second decade was the artificial intelligence revolution and smart batteries; the third decade was the innovation of material systems, namely solid-state batteries."
regarding the safety issues encountered in the first decade, ouyang minggao said that the first thing battery safety faces is thermal runaway. in extreme cases, the temperature can rise by one thousand degrees per second, leading to combustion accidents. to solve the safety problem, it is necessary to start from the perspective of materials, atoms and heat, reveal the mechanism of the thermal runaway process, and then develop thermal runaway and suppression technologies for battery cells, such as coating of electrode materials and high-safety diaphragms.
currently, we are in the second decade, namely the ai revolution and smart batteries. ouyang minggao pointed out that power batteries require intelligent battery management, and intelligentization of the entire life cycle can speed up and reduce costs; in addition, as energy storage batteries become larger and larger, although the specific energy is improved, the risks of safety, life and heterogeneity are greatly increased, and chips and sensors need to be installed inside the battery for full-time monitoring.
as for the solid-state battery technology mentioned in the third "decade", ouyang minggao said that it should be divided into three steps. the first step is to focus on solid-state electrolytes, the second step is to focus on high-capacity composite negative electrodes, and the third step is to focus on high-capacity composite positive electrodes.
however, in ouyang minggao's view, the technological transformation of lithium-ion power batteries will continue for a long time. for china, high-energy-density all-solid-state batteries and low-cost, long-life lithium-ion batteries are equally important to china's power battery industry, and both are needed.
