Media investigations have found that many residential areas in Beijing do not have dedicated carports, so electric bicycles have to use outdoor charging piles to charge in the open air. When it rains, rainwater may seep into the charger and battery interface, causing leakage or short circuit, posing a significant safety hazard. Why are there only charging piles but no carports? Perhaps when the community was first built, sufficient space was not reserved; or the property management was not in place, and the problem of charging electric bicycles in the community was not taken seriously enough.
It should be noted that the construction of electric bicycle charging facilities is mostly a market behavior, but the installation of carports in residential areas involves complex issues such as soliciting opinions and sources of funds. At present, market forces are not enough to achieve the goal of installing carports for charging facilities. This determines that in order to break the deadlock, efforts from all parties are needed. First, relevant government departments should strengthen the planning and supervision of community construction to ensure that new communities have sufficient space for carport construction. Secondly, for old communities, corresponding renovation policies need to be introduced and certain financial support needs to be provided. Finally, relevant companies can optimize the structural design, introduce rain and snow protection functions at the socket, and improve the safety and convenience of charging.
In addition to the back-end charging facilities, the front-end production process cannot be ignored for safe charging of electric bicycles. Data shows that most fire accidents involving electric bicycles are caused by battery failure, among which unqualified battery quality is another major cause. This reminds us that we must strengthen supervision in the production and sales of batteries and crack down on all kinds of counterfeit and shoddy products. In addition, we can also start with the charging process and promote the "battery sharing, replacement instead of charging" model in infrastructure construction. By popularizing smart battery replacement cabinets and other methods, the main power supply of electric bicycles can be transferred from individual consumers to professional companies, realizing centralized control of batteries, minimizing the living space of inferior batteries, and preventing battery failures.
Today, there are more than 400 million electric bicycles in China, and the charging problem cannot be solved overnight. The government, property management, enterprises and residents must "prepare for a rainy day" and take this matter as a major issue to make electric bicycles safer and more reliable to use.
