Wang Shuaiguo, a reporter from Economic ObserverBYD is applying its two key technologies, e-platform 3.0 Evo and fifth-generation DM, to more models to accelerate the technological upgrading of its products.

On August 8, BYD Ocean Network's 2025 Seal and Seal 07DM-i were officially launched. Among them, the 2025 Seal is BYD's first sedan built based on the e platform 3.0 Evo, with a price range of 175,800 to 239,800 yuan; the Seal 07 DM-i is BYD's first medium and large sedan equipped with the fifth-generation DM technology, with a price range of 139,800 to 195,800 yuan.

In May 2024, BYD released the e-platform 3.0 Evo and the fifth-generation DM technology. Among them, BYD e-platform 3.0 Evo is an advanced version of e-platform 3.0. The platform includes five major technology clusters, including CTB vehicle safety architecture, 12-in-1 intelligent electric drive, intelligent wide temperature range high-efficiency heat pump, full-domain intelligent fast charging and intelligent motion control.

The e-platform 3.0 Evo has been improved in terms of safety, efficiency, charging speed, and control. For example, in terms of safety, the e-platform 3.0 Evo adopts CTB battery technology (battery chassis integration) and the endoskeleton CTB safety architecture, which increases the regional body strength by 60%, providing higher safety protection for passengers. In addition, the safety buffer space in the front cabin has been increased by 100mm, further improving the safety performance of the entire vehicle.

The first model of the e-platform 3.0 Evo, the Hiace 07EV, was launched in May this year. BYD said that the Hiace 07EV is equipped with BYD's efficient 12-in-1 intelligent electric drive system, the entire series is equipped with 1200V silicon carbide electronic control, and uses a 23,000rpm mass-produced maximum speed motor, with a maximum speed of more than 225km/h, providing a better acceleration experience and better endurance performance.

However, according to feedback from some users, the e-platform 3.0 Evo does not significantly improve the power part, the high speed of 230km/h is not often used in actual driving, and the improvement in 0-100 acceleration is relatively limited. For example, the 0-100 acceleration of the Haishi 07 four-wheel drive version equipped with the e-platform 3.0 Evo is 4.2 seconds. In comparison, the 0-100 acceleration of the Song L four-wheel drive version without the e-platform 3.0 Evo is 4.3 seconds.

In addition, although the e-platform 3.0 Evo provides a variety of modular designs to meet the needs of different models, the high-cost suspension system increases the manufacturing cost of the vehicle.

In the pure electric market, the e-platform 3.0 Evo can be seen as an advanced technology platform. Compared with its actions in the pure electric field, BYD has made greater moves in the plug-in hybrid field. It launched the fifth-generation DM technology at the end of May. The core advantages of the fifth-generation DM technology lie in engine thermal efficiency and fuel consumption. The BYD Qin L DM-i and Haibao 06 DM-i, which were the first to be equipped with this technology, achieved a fuel consumption of 2.9L per 100 kilometers with an engine thermal efficiency of 46.06%, and a range of 2,100 kilometers with full charge and full fuel.

At the end of July, BYD launched two new models of Song. According to official sources, as compact SUV models, the NEDC fuel consumption of Song L DM-i and 2025 Song PLUS DM-i is 3.9L per 100 kilometers, and the comprehensive range of full charge and full fuel is 1500KM.

The newly launched Haibao 07DM-i is BYD's first mid-to-large sedan equipped with the fifth-generation DM technology. Its fuel consumption under NEDC conditions is 3.4L/100km, and its maximum combined driving range with full fuel and full charge can exceed 2,000km.

However, the fifth-generation DM technology also has shortcomings such as limited power and an inadequately advanced drive system. When driving at high speed for a long time or facing a large load, the 1.5L naturally aspirated engine promoted by the fifth-generation DM technology may not be powerful enough to support the operation of the vehicle, requiring parking and charging.

To solve this problem, BYD added a model equipped with the fifth-generation DM technology 1.5Ti engine to the Haibao 07DM-i. The power of the new plug-in hybrid turbocharged engine has been increased to 115kW, and the power of the motor has been increased to 200kW, making it have both power and energy consumption advantages. However, the price of the Haibao 07 DM-i 1.5T version is 195,800 yuan, 20,000 yuan higher than the top-equipped 1.5L version.

It is worth noting that for plug-in hybrid models, BYD has recently added new models with a pure electric range of less than 100 kilometers in its updated products, such as the new 1.5L 70KM model of the Seal 07DM-i; the new 75KM model of the Song LDM-i and Song PLUS LDM-i.

In this regard, BYD’s official statement is: using lower car purchase thresholds and undiscounted configurations to fully meet the needs of different users and further enhance the competitiveness of vehicle models.

BYD is accelerating the upgrading of its product technology and launching lower-priced models, one of the direct purposes of which is to increase its own sales. In 2023, BYD will achieve 3.01 million passenger car sales in China. BYD has not given a clear statement on its sales target for 2024, and most people speculate that it will be between 3.7 million and 4 million vehicles.

From January to July this year, BYD achieved cumulative sales of 1.948 million passenger cars, up 29% from the same period last year, but the growth rate was much lower than the 61.8% for the whole of last year. To continue to maintain rapid growth, BYD needs to come up with more new technologies and new products, and maintain its price advantage.
