Russia's Viewpoint reported on the 7th that Bennett, a vegetable gardener in Iowa, USA, grew an eggplant that is recognized as the world's largest, weighing 3.78 kilograms. Previously, the largest eggplant was grown in the UK in 2022 and weighed 3.27 kilograms.

In this regard, Russian agronomist and biologist Vorobyev commented that it is not recommended to grow such large crops. Usually, people can get large crops by growing large-fruited varieties. For example, growing "Black Beauty", a variety that can grow relatively large by itself. The second option is to add hormones and apply nitrogen fertilizers above normal levels, including granules that can be found in any gardening store, as well as natural fertilizers such as chicken manure or horse manure. The increase in nitrogen fertilizer content makes the entire above-ground part of the plant (including leaves, stems and fruits) larger.
Vorobyev said that there are not many benefits to eating such vegetables, because nitrogen fertilizers stimulate the massive accumulation of nitrates in vegetables and fruits. This is obviously not good for human health, although they do look impressive. "Of course, this does not mean that fertilizers cannot be used when growing crops, plants need them, but they should be used in moderation," he said.
The report said that the amount of fertilizer required for each crop is different and there is no uniform regulation in this regard. Cucumbers, pumpkins and zucchini prefer organic fertilizers, while tomatoes do not. (Liu Yupeng)
