"Forging Ships and Heading for the Deep Blue: A Biography of Pan Jingfu" by Wang Yanming and Yu Jing, published by Zhejiang University Press
This book records Pan Jingfu's growth from a small boat hiding from the war to the first generation of Chinese missile destroyers designed by herself, and restores Pan Jingfu's great life dedicated to the cause of destroyers for the motherland. The book starts with his childhood "dream of building ships", tells his life experience of fleeing during the war, studying in the Department of Electrical Engineering of Zhejiang University, and then building ships for the country, depicts the ambition, courage and determination of Chinese scientists to realize the scientific and technological strengthening of the army and the modernization of weapons and equipment, and writes a magnificent chapter of the People's Navy from weak to strong and heading for the "deep blue".
>>Selected reading:
Pan Jingfu participated in the transfer and imitation of the base minesweeper in 1955, was responsible for the design and development of the first generation of Type 051 domestic missile destroyers in 1967, and then served as the chief designer of the new generation of Type 052 destroyers in 1984. He retired to the second line in 1997. He has been engaged in ship design and development for more than 40 years. He not only created a powerful weapon for a great country, witnessed the People's Navy from weak to strong, from "yellow water" to "deep blue", and made my country have the confidence to have equal dialogue with the world's military powers, but also laid the ideological foundation, engineering technology foundation, management foundation and military industrial foundation for my country to independently design world-class large surface ships.
Pan Jingfu
Pan Jingfu has devoted herself to the design and development of my country's large surface ships for more than 40 years. She has been responsible for the design and development of two generations and four types of domestic missile destroyers. Through hard work and exploration, she has achieved a series of fruitful results and major awards.
Before the mid-1960s, my country had never had experience in designing and building large surface ships of more than 1,000 tons. In 1970, the first ship of the first generation of Type 051 destroyers was launched, which completely changed the history of China's failure to independently design and build large ships. In 1980, the Type 051Z destroyer was launched, and then realized ocean escort and led a team to visit, allowing the People's Navy to go abroad and have the combat capability to break through the first island chain. In 1988, the Type 051G destroyer was successfully launched, and my country's independently designed destroyers achieved a qualitative leap. The shipborne combat system took shape, making it possible to design and build larger displacement and more modern destroyers. In 1993, the new generation of Type 052 destroyers was launched. This is a modern warship with comprehensive air, anti-ship and anti-submarine combat capabilities. It allows the design and construction of my country's large surface ships to be fully in line with the world's advanced level in terms of concepts, technology, ecology and other aspects, and realizes the leapfrog development of domestic warships in design and construction. The Type 052 destroyer has successfully completed the intercontinental voyage around the Pacific Ocean, making the People's Navy a true "blue water" navy, and is therefore honored as "China's No. 1 ship." Over 40 years have passed in the blink of an eye, and these achievements were made by Pan Jingfu, who led the scientific and technological personnel trained by our country, through hard work and perseverance. While promoting the People's Navy to the "deep blue", Pan Jingfu has also left fruitful results in the design and construction of China's large surface ships.
In World War II, the leading role of aircraft carriers in naval warfare was fully demonstrated. The naval formation with aircraft carriers as the core became a symbol of the naval power of a great power and also became the main combat force for controlling the ocean in the future. As an authoritative destroyer design expert, Pan Jingfu naturally knows the role of aircraft carriers, and understands that although powerful destroyers can become a "blue water" navy, they cannot become a strong blue sea force. Only when destroyers form a strong naval formation with aircraft carriers can they have the strength to compete with other naval powers.
The rusty Varyag aircraft carrier
On March 3, 2002, the rusty Soviet Kuznetsov-class aircraft carrier Varyag docked at Dalian Port after many twists and turns. The arrival of Varyag immediately attracted the interest of many military and ship experts. As a senior ship expert and half military expert, Pan Jingfu was no exception. He was very eager to see Varyag, even if it was just a close look.
When Pan Jingfu was eager to see the Varyag and wanted to do something to help the Chinese realize their dream of owning an aircraft carrier, everything that happened afterwards was actually related to this.
On December 5, 2002, Pan Jingfu had the opportunity to visit the Varyag aircraft carrier during a meeting in Beijing. On the 13th, he boarded the Varyag and inspected the flight deck, hangar, arresting gear compartment, rear engine room, front turbine generator compartment, power control room, power station control room, etc. from the professional perspective of a ship expert. After getting off the ship, he carefully examined the high-raised ski-jump deck at the bow, the superstructure and the stern at the dock, and had a clear understanding of the technical situation of the entire ship. He said: "I went to the Dalian Shipyard to see the Varyag aircraft carrier. The flight deck steel plates of this ship are still in good condition, and the main steam turbine and boiler can be used after debugging. If it can be equipped with domestically developed carrier-based aircraft, arresting devices, power systems, weapons and electronic systems, it will be a real aircraft carrier. After the modification, the take-off and landing tests of carrier-based aircraft can be carried out first. In the distant oceans, it is not possible without an aircraft carrier as an air control force. It would be a pity if it was converted into a sea paradise like the previous Minsk aircraft carrier." After a series of efforts, the modification work of the Varyag aircraft carrier was quickly carried out.
Liaoning, converted from the Varyag aircraft carrier
In September 2012, after the innovation and efforts of Chinese engineers and technicians, the Varyag aircraft carrier was transformed into my country's first aircraft carrier, the Liaoning, and the aircraft carrier dream of generations of Chinese people became a reality. Pan Jingfu was overwhelmed with excitement when she heard the news. Her childhood dream was finally realized.
