poetry inspired a retrospective journey
tang poetry is the cultural memory of the chinese people. "traveling with tang poetry" combines the wonderful tradition of chinese poetry with modern communication methods to reproduce the cultural and tourism road of "poetry and distance". "traveling with tang poetry" (season 2) has a total of 6 episodes, divided into six themes: "song of stone drum", "cold river snow", "song of the frontier", "pipa song", "meeting of two stars", and "difficult to meet". the documentary follows the footsteps of poets such as li bai, du fu, han yu, liu zongyuan, li shangyin, bai juyi, cen shen, wang wei, and wang changling, and leads the audience to the scene of tang poetry. as the "companions" of this trip, the six cultural guests xichuan, cai tianxin, han songluo, yang yu, lu dadong, and huang xiaodan set out on the road with a mission and completed a trip starting from poetry.
in the view of the film's chief director li wenju, in the long history of china, the tang dynasty was an unprecedented unified country. traveling became a compulsory course for tang dynasty scholars. many poets experienced grand tours and wandering stages. du fu had a grand tour experience of ten years, and li bai also had a wandering journey of more than ten years after leaving sichuan. thousands of years ago, in an era without cars, high-speed trains, and airplanes, the footprints of tang dynasty poets were far beyond imagination. the theme of the first season of "traveling with tang poems" is to return to the place where tang poems were produced and experience the poets' lives. the second season focuses on the key stages that affect the poets' lives and poetry creation, bringing surprises to the audience again after three years.
return to the scene to explore the secrets of tang poetry
the people of the tang dynasty left behind more than 2,000 frontier poems, and the most glorious moment of frontier poems belonged to the heyday of the tang dynasty. wang changling, wang zhihuan, wang wei, cen shen, gao shi... a thousand years ago, they crossed the rapids of the yellow river and headed for the distance. writer han songluo grew up in the northwest. in the documentary, he set out again and met the group of frontier poets again in the long rivers, deserts, yellow sands, and sunsets of gansu, and opened the golden tang dynasty poetry scrolls with the sound of "songs of the frontier". every time he went to a place during the journey, han songluo tried to imagine what those who came to the western regions from the central plains and the south thought and felt. he said that this was the most important journey of his life, "the me who has taken this journey and the me who has not taken this journey are two different me."
"an old man in a straw hat and raincoat is fishing alone in the snowy river." in the chapter "snowy river", mathematician and poet cai tianxin takes the audience on a journey of exile to liu zongyuan. in the world of mathematics, cai tianxin often feels lonely, and he likes liu zongyuan and his five-character quatrain "snowy river" more and more. going to hunan and guangxi, which were once full of smoke and wildness, cai tianxin embarks on a journey to find liu zongyuan's footprints and poems, and finally discovers the world, landscape and heart in his works.
in 815 ad, the 43-year-old poet bai juyi was exiled to jiangzhou, now jiujiang. the following year, he created one of the most important works of his life here - "pipa xing". in this poem, bai juyi lamented that "we are both people who have fallen into the world, so why do we have to know each other when we meet?" in the documentary, scholar yang yu visited jiujiang and looked for the process of bai juyi's mentality and cognitive transformation in his poetry creation during the jiangzhou period. the camera captured the secret connection between tang poetry and contemporary life, and found the poetic meaning in bai juyi's poems in modern daily life.
director's voice
the feeling of traveling through time is shocking and happy
"we focus on han yu's trip to lingnan, liu zongyuan's almost collapsed soul during the ten years of exile in yongzhou, the desert that the frontier poets of the prosperous tang dynasty saw for the first time, bai juyi's inner transformation after 'the sima of jiangzhou got his blue shirt wet', the eternal friendship between li bai and du fu, and the amazingly rich inner world of li shangyin, who lived an ordinary life." director li wenju told reporters that the second season will pay more attention to and touch the inner world of tang dynasty poets. the documentary follows this thread to feel the mountains and rivers of china and the still flourishing poetic sentiment, unfolding a magnificent epic picture for the audience.
during the production of this season, the scene that touched li wenju the most was when shooting the episode about li shangyin. the team went to the luoyang ancient tomb museum to shoot the murals of zhao yi's tomb. the murals had particularly clear portraits of tang dynasty ladies. these paintings of ladies belonged to the same era as li shangyin, which was equivalent to the photo album of li shangyin's era. in the program, the costume historian chen shiyu restored the ladies' paintings based on these ladies' paintings. from the costumes to the makeup, and even the models, they were almost replicas of the ladies on the murals. "it was early in the morning when we were shooting. we saw with our own eyes the characters on the ancient murals, wearing embroidered skirts, with gold ornaments on their buns, and the 'blood-stained makeup' unique to li shangyin's era on their faces. they were approaching reality step by step. it really felt like traveling back to the tang dynasty, which was both shocking and happy."
