"The Light of Baking" illuminates the path for disabled people to increase employment and income

Delicious peach cakes, oven-baked fruits, moon cakes... At the just-concluded 2024 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Fresh Corn Industry Development Conference, the delicacies developed and launched by the disabled pastry chefs of the Wenxin Bakery in Jiuxian Town attracted much attention. These delicacies not only demonstrated the exquisite baking skills of the disabled group, but also highlighted the vitality of the cause of people with disabilities in rural revitalization.
In 2023, the Wenxin Bakery Project, a vocational skills training project for people with disabilities supported by the National International Development Cooperation Agency and the United Nations Development Program, was launched in Jiuxian Town, Yanqing District. The project provides valuable vocational skills training opportunities for people with disabilities and their relatives by upgrading training venues, introducing professional equipment, and designing scientific and reasonable training courses.
“As soon as he got the first red envelope from the bakery, he ran home and handed it to me! Over the years, I felt that this child was a mountain weighing on my heart, but with the help of the teachers at the Wenxin Bakery, the child learned baking skills and can support himself. I am grateful to the teachers at the Wenxin Bakery for allowing the child to live with dignity and allowing our family to regain hope.” said the father of Yan Kun, a student at the Vocational Health Station.
It is understood that Jiuxian Town has obtained support from the United Nations World Food Program, the National International Development Cooperation Agency and district-level departments this year, and launched the second phase of baking - Yanqing Sunlight Warm House Disabled Empowerment Project, with the goal of "further expanding the beneficiary population and further improving the efficiency of income increase", and deepening and expanding the baking project. The project covers the construction of solar greenhouses, the supply of local fruits and vegetables, the improvement of bakeries, and the employment assistance for the disabled. It not only solves the problem of equipment constraints, but also promotes the steady improvement of the quality of baked products and the efficiency of income increase with the advantage of self-production of raw materials.
Over the past two years, a total of 190 people have participated in the Wenxin Bakery project, 103 of whom have obtained training completion certificates, produced 45 products, signed 67 orders, and generated more than 100,000 yuan in operating income, helping 42 disabled people increase their income. Starting from September, the baking project will work with caring companies to supply complementary fruits and vegetables to more than 180 children in two kindergartens in Jiuxian Town, helping children grow healthily while also opening a new chapter in empowering and increasing income.
Zhu Fengqin, member of the Jiuxian Town Party Committee and Chairman of the People's Congress, said: "Next, Jiuxian Town will earnestly study and implement the spirit of the 9th Plenary Session of the 3rd District Party Committee, implement the work task of 'using affection and effort to promote people's livelihood security and be pragmatic and heartwarming', and implement projects such as 'Warm Home Bakery' and 'Sunshine Warm Shed to Help the Disabled', further open up sales channels, expand product influence, and strive to drive more disabled people to achieve employment and increase income."
