IT Home reported on August 22 that market research firm TrendForce released a research report today saying that global sales of new energy vehicles (including pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles) reached 3.769 million units in the second quarter of 2024, an increase of nearly 30% compared to the previous quarter and a year-on-year increase of 24.2%.

Although Tesla still holds the largest market share in pure electric vehicles, its sales volume has declined compared to last year. BYD has maintained a steady sales performance in the pure electric vehicle market, and its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle market share exceeded 36% in the second quarter.

The market situation of each category of vehicle (pure electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles) is as follows:

Global sales of pure electric vehicles (BEVs) in the second quarter of 2024 were 2.328 million, an increase of 8% year-on-year

Tesla, which holds the largest market share, saw its sales decline by 4.7% compared to the same period last year. To stimulate market demand, Tesla introduced measures such as price cuts and preferential interest rates in its two major markets, China and the United States.

BYD (excluding Denza) ranked second, with BEV sales up about 20% year-on-year. In addition, BYD's overseas sales performance was strong, with more than 100,000 new energy vehicles, including pure electric vehicles, exported in the second quarter.

The brands ranked third to fifth in this quarter were Volkswagen, SAIC-GM-Wuling and BMW, respectively, and the market shares of these brands did not differ much.

NIO's sales this quarter grew 144% year-on-year, jumping to seventh place.

The Zeekr brand under Geely Holding Group ranked ninth, with sales mainly coming from the Zeekr 001 model.

In the second quarter of 2024, global plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) sales reached 1.439 million units, a year-on-year increase of 64.2%. The top four sales were all Chinese brands.

BYD's brand market share increased to 36.1%, far exceeding the second-place Ideal Auto. Wenjie (IT Home Note: recorded as "Aotu" in the chart) and Changan ranked third and fourth respectively.

Volvo Cars and Mercedes-Benz ranked fifth and sixth, while BMW's second-quarter PHEV sales remained the same as the same period last year, ranking eighth.

Although Jeep's sales and ranking have declined, it is still the best-selling PHEV brand in the U.S. Currently, there are only seven PHEV models in the U.S. that have received federal government subsidies, two of which are produced by Jeep.
