On August 12, a netizen broke the news that a security guard at Hangzhou Greentown Xixi Century Center had a conflict with a food delivery rider, and the security guard allegedly asked the food delivery rider to kneel down, which aroused attention.
One netizen described the incident as follows: a female rider was delivering a takeaway but there was no road to the destination by the river, so the delivery person stopped the car and went through the green belt. When she came out, she stepped on the fence. The property security guard saw that the fence had fallen down and pulled out the key to her electric bike.
In the early morning of August 13, the Xihu Branch of the Hangzhou Public Security Bureau issued a police report. The report stated: "At noon on August 12, 2024, a male food delivery rider named Wang from a food delivery platform stepped on the railing while delivering food in the Xixi Century Center Park in our district and was stopped by the park security. The delivery rider knelt down for fear of affecting the delivery of other orders, which led to a gathering of people at the scene. After receiving the alarm, the local police station immediately dispatched police to the scene to deal with it, and conducted an investigation on the persons involved in accordance with the law. The subsequent handling will be based on the investigation results and in accordance with the law."
After the police issued the notice, Meituan told the reporter of Daily Economic News:We will handle all the unfair treatment that riders may encounter., and cooperate with relevant departments in investigations based on the riders’ demands to effectively safeguard the riders’ legitimate rights and interests.
After the conflict, rumors circulated on social media that "the delivery riders at the scene were collectively banned". In response, Meituan said that throughout the incident,The company has not taken any negative measures against any rider, such as blocking their account or restricting their orders. The company has taken legal measures against the accounts and people behind the creation and spread of rumors.
Meituan revealed that after the conflict occurred, Meituan immediately dispatched a specialist to the scene to assist the rider in handling the conflict, and paid the property management for the fence repair costs. Currently, the rider has returned safely. Regarding the unfair treatment that the rider may have encountered in this conflict, Meituan will provide various corresponding assistance according to the rider's demands.
The incident also exposed the problem of the "last mile" of food delivery into residential communities. Many delivery boys face difficulties in entering doors and parking their cars. Conflicts between the services provided to property owners and "property rules" frequently occur. Recently, there have been many incidents of riders being treated unfairly by security guards.
In this regard, relevant persons from Meituan stated that they will take three major measures to further protect the rights and interests of riders, including improving the rider rights protection team, providing necessary security guarantees and legal support through a dedicated line for riders; actively communicating with local communities and property companies to explore win-win situations and build more rider-friendly communities; and coordinating with all sectors of society to optimize the safety of rider delivery and accident response guarantees, safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of riders, and providing users with certain and timely takeaway services.
According to China Business News, Meituan and Ele.me suspended food delivery services near Xixi Century Center that evening. After locating at Xixi Century Center, the page displayed "Delivery services are temporarily unavailable in the area where you are currently located." On the evening of August 12, Meituan and Ele.me had resumed food delivery services near Xixi Century Center.
