The suspension of the first commercial hydrogen-powered tram in China has attracted attention. Jiemian News reported that according to the "Gaoming Tram" public account, the Gaoming Modern Tram Demonstration Line in Foshan City will be suspended from August 6, and the equipment and facilities need to be arranged for maintenance.
Public data shows that the line was put into operation in December 2019 with a total investment of 838 million yuan and a total length of about 6.5 kilometers. It was launched with the halo of "China's first hydrogen energy" tram line, but it was unexpectedly suspended after only five years of operation, which is really a pity.
The authorities did not give a clear explanation for the sudden suspension of operation. The fact is that the passenger flow of this line has been declining year after year since it was put into operation. A media reporter measured last year that "a tram with a full load of 285 people can only carry a maximum of 16 people throughout the entire journey."
Because few people ride on it, the local residents jokingly call it the "ghost tram". Not only is its construction cost high, but its daily operating cost is also high. The line's annual ticket revenue is less than 400,000 yuan, and the huge cost hole can only be maintained by fiscal subsidies. In less than five years of operation, the fiscal expenditure was nearly 350 million yuan, and it has become a bottomless pit-like "money-eating beast". It is not surprising that it has stopped operating.
