In a recent interview with GamingBolt, the developers of Marvel Contest of Champions said that it is a huge challenge to ensure the balance of the game while giving each character a unique way to play. Among them, designing heroes that mainly focus on melee combat, such as Thor, Spider-Man, and the Hulk, is even more difficult. Because if the skills of these characters are not properly handled, the game can easily become chaotic and lose its fun.

NetEase Games told foreign media GamingBolt: "One of our biggest challenges is to design and effectively express a series of melee-based superheroes, such as Hulk, Venom, Magik, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Thor, etc. Although each character has unique abilities, their common melee characteristics bring great difficulties to the design. As a team combat game, if the melee mechanism is not handled well, the battle will lack depth and become chaotic and uninteresting."

The developers said the rich library of potential moves and skills in Marvel characters helped them overcome this challenge.

“However, the wide range of abilities across Marvel characters provides us with plenty of opportunities to explore and exploit. For example, with Hulk, we designed and replicated his incredible leaping ability, allowing him to knock flying opponents off their feet, becoming the nemesis of aerial heroes and adding a unique dimension to his fighting style.

Venom's symbiote properties have been expanded to provide mid-range combat capabilities, complementing his primary melee strengths. Likewise, Spider-Man's agility is fully utilized, allowing him to fight seamlessly between close and long range, and players can adjust their fighting style as the battle requires.

This approach ensures that each character has rich mechanical design and provides an enjoyable gameplay experience.”
