Rusty Rabbit producer Yuichiro Saito: Only true respect and love can make a good game

During ChinaJoy 2024, the 2.5D horizontal scrolling action-adventure game "Rusty Rabbit", jointly created by NetEase and Nitroplus and written by the famous playwright Gen Urobuchi, came to the CJ site for the first time to meet domestic players.

This game was originally just a work created based on personal interest, but unexpectedly, after NetEase Games saw it, both parties decided to vigorously promote it, determined to make it a game that only Gen Urobuchi and NetEase Games could create.

Now, with the cooperation of both parties, the game has undergone many wonderful changes and will be officially released on September 24. At the ChinaJoy site, the first domestic trial was provided. Taking this opportunity, YeZiZhu had a face-to-face exchange with producer Saito Yuichiro to further explore the story behind the game.



  1. Previously, you revealed that you want to make Rusty Rabbit a game that will make users feel that "this is a game that can only be created by the cooperation between Gen Urobuchi and NetEase Games". What are the specific criteria for measurement? What is the uniqueness of its core gameplay?

  Producer Saito:The cooperation started with a very good game producer from NetEase who particularly liked the work of our teacher Gen Urobuchi. He liked the script of Rusty Rabbit very much when it was still a semi-finished product. He learned that Gen Urobuchi was also very interested in turning the script into a game and he made the connection to facilitate this cooperation. We both hope to turn the script we love into a game that can be pushed to the market for the majority of players to enjoy and experience. This bond is something that other manufacturers do not have.

Among many creators, only Gen Urobuchi's talent can write this script; among the top game production teams, only NetEase can respect the original script and original teacher of "Rusty Rabbit" enough. Only by truly respecting and loving the original work can a good game be made. Only under the bond between Gen Urobuchi and NetEase can the original work be respected to the greatest extent and truly invested in production, and this game can be born, and all these things will eventually be reflected in the game.



The biggest difference between this game and similar games is its development process. Traditional similar games usually require players to accept NPC tasks or kill monsters to obtain resources, and then upgrade equipment or skill points to improve their abilities. In our game, players play as a cute rabbit in a ruined world abandoned by humans to collect some "waste" to assemble and strengthen their robots. In this process, there will be more surprising discoveries through exploration of the game world. This unfixed and always curious development gameplay is the biggest feature of our game.



  2. The game has been announced to be released on September 24, 2024, and is expected to be available on PS5 and PC platforms. How is the overall adjustment of the game now? Does it have high requirements for PC configuration?

  Producer Saito:Now the game adjustment has entered the final stage. As a game with high-quality graphics, it will definitely have very high requirements on the equipment for players who pursue high-quality graphics. If you just want to experience the gameplay of this game, turning on the low-quality mode will have very low requirements on the equipment. Basically, as long as the device is not very old, you can play it normally.

  3. This is a 2.5D horizontal scrolling action game. Are there any unique designs or ideas in its combat part or weapons?

  Producer Saito:This game is divided into two parts: exploration and combat. Our protagonist will carry 4 weapons at the same time to deal with various battles. Different weapons will not only have different effects in combat, but also need to switch different weapons when dealing with different obstacles. Being able to switch weapons freely and quickly in combat to deal with different battles and obstacles during exploration is a major feature of the game.





  4. The gameplay of this type of horizontal scrolling action game is quite particular about the difficulty adjustment. Will there be any requirements for the player's operation itself in this game?

  Producer Saito:The operating requirements are different for players of different positions. For hardcore players who pursue extreme speed, of course, their hand speed, reaction, and understanding of equipment and skills need to reach a very high level. For players with poor operating skills, they can also pass the level by slowly exploring the world and upgrading their mecha.

  5. Each character in the game has its own plot and background story. Will the producer make some changes during the development process?whereDo you have a preference for certain characters? Will there be some Easter eggs in the game?

  Producer Saito:The protagonist of the story, Stamp, was created by Mr. Gen Urobuchi based on what he saw and felt when looking back on his life experiences. During the creative process, he took the perspective of the protagonist Stamp into consideration, so I like the character of Stamp more.



Stamp's character is stubborn, impatient, and outspoken, which alienated him from his daughter and indirectly led to her running away from home. With different life experiences, our teachers at NetEase actually prefer these characters in the BB group in the game. There are also many obvious Easter egg plots in the game to enrich the game experience. The aesthetics are diverse. We hope that each character will be loved by different players, and we will not favor one over another in the design of each character.



  6. Plot thinking that is too deep and sad may affect the entertainment value of the game. How will this game strike a balance?

  Producer Saito:The plot of this work is indeed set against a relatively sad background, but the perspective of our protagonist is not in a very depressed state. The overall plot advocates a relatively positive and optimistic attitude towards life. The plot will not always overemphasize the pessimistic worldview background, but more of a positive outlook on life. We will also add many relatively lighthearted and funny specific plots to dilute the pessimism of the story background, so as to achieve a balance between plot thinking and entertainment.





  7. Will there be more related projects after the game is released? For example, launching derivative animations and comics?

  Producer Saito:Because we are also cooperating with a Japanese animation production company for this production, and the characters and plots created are also quite charming. We also hope to launch more peripheral animations and comics, but at this stage our main focus is still on creating games, and we don’t have a specific plan in this regard. We need to wait until the game is launched to see the feedback from players before deciding whether to invest in production.
