The “circle of friends” of the NIO Energy charging network has expanded again, and this time it has joined hands with Huawei’s automobiles.

On July 17, NIO’s official Weibo account announced that the NIO Energy charging network is open to Hongmeng Zhixing (including brands such as Wenjie, Zhijie, and Xiangjie). It is understood that NIO Energy has established a charging network covering the whole country and is open to sharing for the entire industry, with more than 80% of the power serving non-NIO users.

Previously, Weilai Vice President Shen Fei and Huawei Terminal BGCTO Li Xiaolong had discussed the development prospects of the battery swap industry on Weibo, and had a disagreement on whether battery swap can replace supercharging. However, the disagreement between Weilai and Huawei executives in the field of battery swap did not affect the cooperation between the two companies in the field of charging.

NIO joins hands with Hongmeng Intelligent Driving to form a strong alliance in the field of charging

NIO Energy is a brand under NIO that focuses on energy replenishment. It has a widely deployed network of charging and swapping facilities, including supercharging piles, battery swapping stations, etc., and relies on NIO cloud technology to build an "rechargeable, swappable and upgradeable" energy service system.

In fact, the cooperation between NIO Energy and Hongmeng Intelligent Driving has already been hinted. On July 11, in response to the question of "Hongmeng Intelligent Driving connected to NIO charging piles", Ma Lin, assistant vice president of NIO brand and communication, responded on Weibo: "Wow, it was discovered before the official announcement... In addition to building battery swap stations, NIO Energy will continue to build a large number of charging piles this year. Most of the battery swap stations built this year will also be integrated charging and swapping stations, serving users of various brands of vehicles including Hongmeng Intelligent Driving."

In the field of charging, the cooperation between NIO Energy and Hongmeng Intelligent Driving can be said to be a strong combination. As of July 17, NIO Energy has deployed 3,904 charging stations and 22,822 charging piles across the country, with an average daily availability rate of 99.72%, making NIO the car brand with the most charging piles in the country.

Huawei has also continued to make efforts in the field of supercharging, launching products such as Huawei's fully liquid-cooled supercharging terminal. It is understood that Huawei's fully liquid-cooled supercharging terminal has a maximum output power of 600 kilowatts on 800-volt platform models, which can bring a charging experience close to "one kilometer per second" to new energy vehicles, and a range of nearly 300 kilometers can be achieved after charging for 5 minutes.

On December 8, 2023, at the 2023 World New Energy Vehicle Congress (WNEVC) held in Haikou, Hainan, Hou Jinlong, President of Huawei Digital Energy Technology Co., Ltd., stated that Huawei Digital Energy plans to take the lead in deploying more than 100,000 Huawei fully liquid-cooled ultra-fast charging piles in more than 340 cities and major highways across the country in 2024, realizing "high-quality charging wherever there is a road."

At present, charging network sharing has become an industry trend. Take Tesla as an example. Since Tesla opened its charging network to some non-Tesla vehicles in China in April 2023, as of March 2024, Tesla has opened more than 350 destination charging stations, which can support charging of most mainstream brands.

NIO is also continuously expanding its "charging circle of friends". On June 24, NIO announced that it had reached a charging interconnection cooperation with FAW Hongqi. In the future, the two parties will interconnect and work together to provide users with more convenient services and build a new energy ecosystem for smart electric vehicles.

On June 13, NIO announced that it had reached a charging interconnection cooperation with Deep Blue Automobile, and 200,000 Deep Blue users can charge at more than 20,000 NIO charging piles across the country. On June 7, NIO Energy and GAC Energy officially reached a charging network interconnection cooperation.

According to a research report by CITIC Securities, Huawei announced that it will deploy more than 100,000 supercharging piles by 2024, and the corresponding market space is expected to be close to 60 billion yuan. At the same time, Tesla announced that it would open and upgrade its charging network in mainland China, and it is expected that more than 350 supercharging stations will be open to non-Tesla vehicles. With leading companies focusing on the layout of supercharging equipment and the rapid increase in supercharging models of mainstream car companies, it is expected that supercharging will develop rapidly against the background of intensive product launches at both ends of the vehicle and the pile.

Battery swapping vs. supercharging: technical routes lead to divergence

Before NIO Energy and Hongmeng Intelligent Driving reached a cooperation, NIO and Huawei executives had differences in the field of battery swapping.

On July 7, in response to a netizen's question "Some people say that battery swapping will eventually replace supercharging, what do you think about this?", Huawei Terminal BGCTO Li Xiaolong said: "If you have the opportunity to see the thickness and size comparison of the battery that can be swapped designed a few years ago and the latest battery today, you may change your mind. Modern technology is developing too fast, and compatibility with old batteries is a very heavy burden."

The Weibo post has been deleted

On July 10, Weilai Vice President Shen Fei said on Weibo: "Don't speak lightly in areas you are not familiar with, otherwise there is a high probability that your experts will become experts. This is what a Tsinghua professor repeatedly emphasized when the host of the artificial intelligence conference invited him to speak a few days ago, and I agree with him." It is suspected that he was responding to Bruce Lee's point of view.

On the same day, NIO’s official Weibo account posted a message saying: “Is battery swapping going to be replaced by ultra-fast charging? Wrong! Charging and battery swapping are not mutually exclusive but complement each other to meet the full-scenario charging needs of electric vehicle users. NIO’s ‘both charging and battery swapping’ is the best and most comprehensive charging solution.”

At present, compared with the battery replacement model, more car companies choose to focus on the construction of supercharging stations, and it has become a trend for car companies to build their own supercharging stations. In May, Musk posted on the social platform and put forward the latest goal of the supercharging network layout: Tesla will spend more than US$500 million to expand its supercharging station network in 2024 to build thousands of new supercharging stations.

On June 27, Ideal Auto announced that its 500th supercharging station was officially put into operation, and plans to launch more than 2,000 supercharging stations by the end of 2024. It is understood that the Ideal 5C supercharging station allows the car to travel 500 kilometers after high-speed charging in 12 minutes.

Looking beyond the enterprise side, major cities are currently focusing on the construction of supercharging networks, while also taking into account the development of battery swapping networks. In 2023, Shenzhen proposed to build a "supercharging city", with the goal of building 300 new energy vehicle supercharging stations within three years, achieving a 1:1 ratio of supercharging stations to gas stations.

In recent years, Guangzhou has proposed to build a "supercharging city", with the goal of basically completing the construction of the "supercharging city" by 2024, with about 1,000 super-fast charging stations and about 200 battery swap stations. Hainan has proposed to build a "supercharging island", and by 2023, more than 100 supercharging stations will be built within a public supercharging network service radius of no less than 3 kilometers.

Overall, China's supercharging market is expanding. The "China High Voltage Fast Charging Industry Development Report 2023-2025" mentioned that according to the 800V and above high voltage supercharging model plans released by major domestic automakers, high-end models that meet supercharging requirements will be launched intensively in 2023, and most mainstream models will support high voltage fast charging in 2025. It is expected that by the end of 2026, the market share of models supporting high voltage fast charging will reach more than 13 million.
