no matter what you think of the tesla cybertruck and the people who drive it, people who want an electric pickup are choosing it over its competitors at an alarming rate. granted, it only accounts for a small share of the overall auto market, but as early as july, cybertruck sales were almost as high as the sales of all other electric pickups combined.

according to the latest data from s&p global, a total of 5,175 cybertrucks were delivered in july. on the surface, this is a very strong number, but when you look at ev truck deliveries as a whole, the picture becomes much worse.

according to automotive news, july deliveries of all other electric trucks combined totaled just 5,175. that’s a surprising relative dominance for elon musk’s latest creation.

during the summer, the cybertruck nearly outsold the rivian r1t, ford f-150 lightning, chevrolet silverado ev, gmc sierra ev, and gmc hummer ev pickup combined.

overall, electric vehicle registrations rose to 118,273 in july from 100,620 in the same month last year. the share of electric vehicles in the u.s. light vehicle market rose to 8.5%, up 0.9% from the same period last year.

overall, things are not bad, but s&p claims that much of the improvement is due to very strong fiscal incentives. hey, whatever.

the rest of the news was a bit mixed for tesla. the automaker accounted for 48% of those vehicle deliveries, but that was down slightly from 56% in the same period last year. still, 48% is an insane number.

still, tesla is showing some signs of weakness, autonews reports. model 3 registrations fell 31% in july compared to the same month last year. that's bad news considering the car was just updated, but it makes sense. the cheapest model 3 lost the federal electric vehicle tax credit earlier this year due to stricter battery sourcing requirements.

in many ways, other brands are starting to catch up to tesla...sort of. non-tesla electric vehicle registrations were up 38% year-over-year.

hyundai motor group, which operates under the hyundai, kia and genesis brands, ranked second with 10,846 registrations, the data showed. general motors ranked third with 9,767 registrations for its chevrolet, cadillac, gmc and brightdrop brands. ford motor co. ranked fourth with 9,504 registrations, s&p global mobility said.

registrations of the rivian r1s crossover, the startup’s best-selling consumer vehicle, fell 18% to 1,545 in july from a year ago. kia’s ev9, also a three-row electric crossover, surpassed the rivian r1s with 1,960 registrations in july. the ev9 went on sale in december.

rivian's two consumer models, the r1s and r1t pickup trucks, saw combined registrations fall 0.3% to 2,522 in july. rivian closed its normal, illinois, plant in april to retool for production of its new r1 model. registration data showed rivian, including its commercial vans, fell to seventh place in the electric vehicle brand rankings in july from fourth in june.

of course, other automakers have made considerable progress on tesla when it comes to electric vehicles.
