Express delivery companies only care about their face and are the first to "swipe". They need to give a reasonable explanation to the public on what the basis is and whether it is necessary.

Recently, some Shanghai residents found that they still need to verify their face when sending express delivery at express delivery outlets or self-service counters. Do you also need to "scan your face" when sending express delivery? On August 6, the WeChat account of "Shanghai Internet Rumor Refutation" responded to the requirement of "scanning your face" when sending express delivery, saying that the collection and delivery process is being redesigned, and facial recognition technology is being piloted and is not mandatory. But the response is a response, but in reality you are already being asked to "scan your face", so please give a reason for this practice.
The need to "scan your face" when sending express delivery is not unique to Shanghai. According to the Workers' Daily, Ms. Zhong, a Beijing citizen, told reporters, "On July 30, I sent a document by express delivery in the same city. When sending the document, the courier asked me to verify my identity through facial recognition, but I had clearly done real-name authentication before placing the order." In response, Ms. Zhong said, "Is it necessary to enter facial information when sending an express delivery?" This is actually a common question in the minds of the public. It is undeniable that the "face scanning" technology, that is, facial recognition technology, has demonstrated its application value of security and convenience in many fields. However, from the perspective of technological development, the widespread application of any new technology in social life will always bring more or less discomfort. This is also one of the reasons why people question the need to "scan your face" when sending express delivery.
Whether it is doubt or discomfort, it should not be a reason to hinder the development of technology. Moreover, from the perspective of ensuring the safety of the source of postal express delivery, it is necessary to strengthen the implementation of the real-name collection and delivery management system through technical means. This is not only related to the postal express industry and the public, but also to economic development. Based on this, the State Post Bureau is currently organizing the headquarters of the delivery companies to carry out process reengineering of the internal real-name collection and delivery management system, the overall process of real-name collection and delivery, and the collection and delivery process of the enterprise information system. For the first time to send a parcel from a certain brand of express delivery company, it is necessary to show, check, and register the identity information. For the second delivery, the identity information needs to be checked. In order to ensure the effective implementation of the real-name system for express delivery, strict registration and verification of the sender's identity can and should be done, but it does not mean that it must be "face-scanning".
In addition, in April this year, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a new version of the national standard "Express Delivery Service", which clearly stated that the collection of personal information of delivery service users by express delivery service entities should be limited to the minimum scope to achieve the purpose of express delivery services, including name, contact information, mailing (receiving) address, mailing item information, ID card information, etc., and user personal information should not be collected excessively. Among them, there are no more detailed regulations on facial recognition. The "Cybersecurity Law" stipulates that facial information is personal information protected by law, and its processing should follow the principles of legality, legitimacy and necessity, and shall not be excessively processed. The regulations in all aspects are very clear, but express delivery companies only use "face" as an example and take the lead in "swiping". What is the basis and whether it is necessary? A reasonable explanation needs to be given to the public.
If the explanation is just to talk about the real-name system, it is obviously unsatisfactory. Because real-name verification requires an ID card and a name, and collecting facial information of a person's face has actually exceeded the scope of real-name verification. In other words, although "face scanning" is more advanced and helps to implement the real-name system, it is an optional option rather than a mandatory option. In this sense, the reason for "face scanning" when sending express delivery is obviously insufficient. Moreover, when the social and ethical issues brought about by the abuse of "face scanning", especially the worrying personal privacy issues, are already a consensus of the whole society, the express delivery industry has not established a sound "face scanning" technology application management system and cannot provide the necessary technical security guarantees, but it is chasing people everywhere to "scan their faces". In addition to creating public concerns, it is difficult to see any tangible benefits.
In summary, considering the current reality that face recognition is required to send express deliveries, the express delivery industry needs to give a reason on the one hand, and on the other hand should clarify and unify the methods and means of verifying the identity of senders across the entire industry as soon as possible, and do not disregard the security of public information for the sake of one's own convenience.
