IT Home reported on July 16 that due to various reasons, the performance and production capacity of the 4680 battery previously touted by Musk failed to reach its goals in 2023, which led to the multiple delays of Tesla's planned "$25,000 electric car" and then shelved it in February this year.

The Information quoted three people familiar with the matter as saying that Musk has lost his patience and issued a new "military order" to the 4680 battery research and development team in May this year, requiring them to solve the technical problem of battery collapse during use by the end of this year while further cutting costs.

In fact, Tesla's 4680 battery production capacity has expanded significantly. It has now added two additional assembly lines on the basis of one production line and one assembly line. At the same time, it is also conducting production and performance improvement tests of 4680 batteries.

Karn Budhiraj, Tesla's vice president of supply chain, said: "We have one production line under commissioning and four more will be installed in the third quarter of this year. Therefore, there is no doubt that this year is an important year for the mass production of 4680 batteries."

The Tesla 4680 battery is a new battery technology announced by Tesla at the 2020 Battery Day event. It is a cylindrical battery with a diameter of 46 mm and a height of 80 mm. Compared with the previous 2170 battery, its single cell energy is increased by 5 times, its power is increased by 6 times compared to the battery with tabs, and its power output is increased by 6 times.

Tesla also announced a new manufacturing technology called dry electrode battery (DBE) at Battery Day 2021, which greatly improves battery performance through a new silicon negative electrode. However, the 4680 batteries currently produced by Tesla still use a similar chemical composition to the 2170 NMC battery, and do not use silicon negative electrodes and DBE.

IT Home reported on June 6 that Tesla announced that the Austin Gigafactory has produced 50 million 4680 batteries. In the past year, Tesla's 4680 battery production has increased significantly, with a cumulative output of 40 million units, equivalent to an average of nearly 1 million units per week.
