According to statistics, compared with previous years, the proportion of advertising revenue has exceeded that of subscription revenue, becoming the main driving force of my country's online literature market revenue; the online literature industry's overseas market revenue was 4.35 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.06%, and the total number of my country's online literature works exported overseas (including original overseas works of online literature platforms) was approximately 695,800 volumes (types), a year-on-year increase of 29.02%.
As of the end of 2023, the total number of resident authors on my country's online literature platforms will be approximately 29.2943 million, and young and middle-aged authors are still the absolute main force in online literature creation; the scale of online literature users has reached 550 million, an increase of 52 million from 2022, and the gender distribution of users is relatively balanced.
The report shows that in 2023, Chinese online literature continued to delve into realistic themes, and the diversified transformation of IP achieved remarkable results. Judging from the development trend, in the future, China's online literature industry will help build an overseas communication system for Chinese culture through a strong full-IP industry chain ecosystem.
81 outstanding online literary works were collected by the National Library of Editions, including 19 works by Yuewen. So far, the number of Yuewen's works collected by the National Library of Editions has increased to 76, including many classics such as "Celebrating More Than Years", "Dafeng Night Watchmen", "Lord of Mysteries", and "The King's Avatar", covering multiple categories such as science fiction, reality, history, fairy tales, fantasy, and romance, showing a development trend of continuous optimization of the type structure of online literature. "Above the Flying Flow", "Luo Jiuzhen", "Dongting Tea Master", "Picking Stars with One Hand", "Fire Ambition", "Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter of Tao Sanyuan", "Gold Medal Apprentice", "Asking Rice", "Just Getting Married", and "Backfire Rescue" were selected as the annual outstanding online literary works with realistic and historical themes, and "Welcome to Maile Village", "The Third Brigade", "Pretentious Revelation", "Martial Universe", and "Provoke" were selected as the annual outstanding IP transformation works.
Focusing on topics such as how online literature empowers multiple industries, drives the high-quality development of related industries, and the overseas dissemination of online literature, He Hong, director of the Online Literature Center of the China Writers Association, had a conversation with online writers Yao Ying and Chen Sa, China Online CEO Yang Ruizhi, and Russian online reader Tang Xilan. Online literature is "continuously evolving", building a more extensive connected stage for global cultural exchanges, and has also become an important vehicle for promoting Chinese culture to go global.
As an important source of content for the digital cultural industry, the IP resource attributes of online literature are becoming increasingly prominent. The report shows that by the end of 2023, the number of online literature IP adaptations will be 72,674, which will continue to drive the prosperity of physical publishing, audio, animation, film and television, games, and derivative products.
In the first half of this year, the dramas "Journey to the West", "Joy of Life Season 2" and "The Story of Rose" were all huge hits. Dramas adapted from IPs, such as "Mo Yu Yun Jian", were also very popular. Comprehensive linkage and commercialization around IP have released the huge energy and commercial value of IP, injecting strong momentum into the film and television market.
Take the IP of Joy of Life as an example. The second season of the series of the same name ranked first in the real-time ratings of all channels in China on CCTV-8 for 18 consecutive days, breaking several historical records of Tencent Video and becoming the most popular Chinese mainland drama ever broadcast on Disney+. The largest-scale IP "group battle" in history was launched around Joy of Life, exploring the linkage of the industrial chain such as literature, film and television, derivative cards, games, and short dramas.
On the Qidian Reading App, the exclusive story "Ye Qingmei's Diary" supervised by Mao Ni topped the hot search on multiple platforms, and the reading volume of the original work increased by 38 times, and Qidian Reading's DAU also hit a new annual high; the order volume of the cards of "Celebrating More Than Years Season 2" exceeded 20 million before the show was broadcast, setting a record for the sales volume of collectible cards in China's film and television categories; related derivatives were hot-selling on multiple platforms, with nearly 200,000 blind boxes alone sold; IP licensing cooperation with about 20 brands, covering toys and peripherals, 3C digital, offline physical entertainment, beverages, etc.; the mini-program game adapted from the "Celebrating More Than Years" IP was quickly launched, and a series of derivative short dramas are also under development. Industry insiders believe that "Celebrating More Than Years" has formed an IP linkage effect in the sense of the industrial chain, setting a benchmark for the subsequent diversified and serialized development of other IPs such as "The Son-in-law" and "The Night Watchman of Dafeng".
The report shows that in 2023, the overseas market revenue of China's online literature industry will reach 4.35 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 7.06%. With the increasing maturity of the domestic IP ecological chain, online literature going overseas has upgraded to IP ecological going overseas, becoming the largest IP source for Chinese cultural products going overseas.
IP going overseas, on the one hand, applies AI translation to accelerate the scale and multi-language export of online literature; on the other hand, strengthens global industry cooperation and increases the export of IP ecology such as animation, film and television, and games. By the end of 2023, Yuewen has launched about 3,800 translated works of Chinese online literature overseas, and the revenue contributed by AI translation works currently accounts for about 30% of Yuewen's total overseas revenue. In addition, Yuewen has authorized more than 1,000 digital publishing and physical book publishing works to overseas, launched more than 100 audio works, and launched about 1,500 comic works. In the first half of 2024, IP dramas such as "The Journey of Phoenixes", "Celebrating Yu Nian Season 2", and "Mo Yu Yun Jian" continued to land on overseas TV stations and mainstream video platforms, triggering a craze for chasing dramas.
As the IP overseas matrix takes shape, the global influence of Chinese IP continues to increase. "Active foreign trade is a clear sign of the prosperity of Chinese culture in the new era." Hou Xiaonan, CEO and President of China Literature Group, said that China Literature looks forward to working with creators and industry partners to uphold integrity and innovation, further exert the cultural centripetal force, industrial cohesion and global appeal of "online literature +", tell new stories about Chinese culture, and continue to work hard to create Chinese cultural IP with global influence.
It is reported that this conference, with the theme of "Gathering the Internet to Create Vitality and Compose a Splendid Chapter of the Times", is hosted by the Publicity Department of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China (Beijing Municipal Press and Publication Bureau), China Audio-Visual and Digital Publishing Association, China Writers Association Network Literature Center, Office of Cyber Security and Informatization Committee of Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China, Beijing Economic and Technological Development Zone Management Committee, and co-organized by Beijing Municipal Committee of the Communist Youth League, Beijing Municipal Radio and Television Bureau, Beijing Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and Beijing Publishing Group.
