from 2023 to now, it is the stage of global new energy vehicles "explosion". in the map of china's automobile industry, anhui is undoubtedly the biggest "dark horse" in the past two years. thanks to the positioning and goal of "first industry", today, the automobile industry has not only handed in an excellent "transcript", but also has become one of anhui's most dazzling business cards.

strong breakthrough

let’s go back to a year ago.

in june 2023, anhui held a provincial conference to promote the construction of new energy vehicle industry clusters, established a high-level leadership group, and set up a provincial automobile office with entity operations. the standing committee of the provincial people's congress reviewed and approved the country's first provincial-level special local regulations on the new energy vehicle industry. the fifth plenary session of the 11th provincial party committee clearly proposed to insist on taking the automobile industry as the "first industry" and accelerate the construction of a strong province of new energy vehicles.

what is a "primary industry"? this is an industry that is the most dominant and competitive in a regional industrial system and has a great contribution to the regional economy. it is not only the pillar of the regional economy, but also can drive the development of other industries.

why the automotive industry?

at present, anhui has gathered 7 vehicle manufacturers, including chery group, nio, volkswagen anhui, hefei byd, jac group, hefei changan, and hanma technology, with a full range of products including passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and special vehicles, and a complete industrial chain. after decades of accumulation and breakthroughs, anhui's automobile industry has a good industrial foundation and strong development potential in terms of production capacity, supporting facilities, and technology.

strong breakthrough has been the keyword for anhui automobile in the past year. the data is the most convincing - in 2023, anhui's automobile production will be 2.491 million vehicles, jumping from the 7th place in the country in 2022 to the 2nd place in the country, a year-on-year increase of 48.1%, accounting for 8.3% of the country. among them, the production of new energy vehicles is 868,000 vehicles, rising from the 7th place in the country in 2022 to the 4th place in the country, a year-on-year increase of 60.5%, accounting for 9.1% of the country.

1.147 million vehicles were exported, up 80.1% year-on-year, accounting for 23.4% of the national total. in other words, one out of every four vehicles exported nationwide was made in anhui.

not long ago, chery holdings was listed in the fortune global 500 for the first time, becoming the first local automaker in anhui to enter the fortune global 500. jac motors' annual sales and commercial vehicle sales last year both increased significantly year-on-year. nio rolled off its 500,000th mass-produced car in may this year. byd is building a "super factory" in hefei, with an annual output value expected to reach nearly 200 billion yuan.

data from the national bureau of statistics show that from january to june 2024, anhui's automobile production reached 1.506 million vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 46.7%, accounting for 10.8% of the national total, ranking second in the country.

it is no exaggeration to say that a new energy vehicle can be manufactured without leaving anhui.

this is due to the province-wide layout. at present, anhui has basically formed an integrated development pattern with "hefei-wuhu" dual-core linkage and other cities supporting multiple points. as of the end of june, there were more than 1,360 automobile manufacturing enterprises above designated size in anhui, a net increase of more than 80 over the same period last year.

while the output of complete vehicles is soaring, anhui focuses on the "integration of whole and parts" and turns its attention to the vast counties to enhance its leading competitiveness.

not long ago, the anhui provincial automobile office, the anhui provincial development and reform commission and other departments jointly issued the "anhui provincial county auto parts industry cluster construction action plan (2024-2027)", proposing to focus on promoting the county auto parts industry to become bigger, stronger and better. by 2027, the county auto parts industry cluster revenue will reach about 500 billion yuan, 5-7 new 10 billion-level industrial clusters will be added, and each prefecture-level city will cultivate at least one county auto parts industry cluster.

do not rush into it and avoid homogeneous competition. after anhui established the "first industry", it focused on promoting the integrated development of complete vehicles, parts and aftermarkets, clearly strengthened the guidance of industrial development planning, and deepened the concept of regional division of labor and cooperation and staggered development.

in addition to the seven complete vehicle companies, namely chery, nio, volkswagen anhui, byd, jac, changan, and hanma technology, the province has initially formed a number of characteristic automotive parts industry clusters, covering the entire automotive industry chain including power batteries, motors and electronic controls, intelligent networking, lightweight materials, sales and maintenance, and recycling.

anqing car lights, xuancheng's upstream raw material smelting and processing, chizhou's magnesium-based new materials, bozhou's parts, ma'anshan's power battery materials, tongling's copper-based new materials, huainan's new energy vehicle aftermarket, lu'an's new energy storage, chuzhou's "new three things", huaibei's ceramic aluminum new materials, bengbu's glass, fuyang's equipment manufacturing industry, suzhou's cloud computing, and huangshan's automotive electronics have all "entered the chain."

data shows that in 2023, the total revenue of anhui auto parts companies will account for about 48% of the province's total automotive industry chain revenue. as of the end of march this year, there were more than 2,700 auto parts companies in anhui province, accounting for about 60% of the total automotive industry chain companies.

take byd as an example. the byd new energy vehicle parts industrial park in funan, with an investment of 10 billion yuan, has started construction. the project will build a new energy passenger vehicle parts production line, which can provide supporting equipment for 1 million new energy passenger vehicles each year after completion. at present, byd is forming a new energy vehicle base with hefei as the core, and a new power battery and core key parts production base supported by wuhu, bengbu, chuzhou and fuyang.

in the next step, anhui will also use the seven complete vehicle companies in the province as the driving force to focus on building new energy vehicle manufacturing bases in "xiatang", "xingang-zhongpai" and "shouxian economic development zone", power battery production and recycling bases in "wuhu economic development zone", "lujiang high-tech zone" and "shucheng economic development zone", new energy vehicle parts intelligent flexible manufacturing base in "nanling economic development zone", and automobile lightweight supporting demonstration base in "hanshan economic development zone".

there is a lot to be done

intelligent connected cars equipped with large models, flying cars with wings, 3d intelligent driving cockpits with holographic projection... at the 2024 beijing international automotive exhibition held in april this year, the anhui theme day event was accompanied by the melodious huangmei opera tunes, which left a deep impression on chinese and foreign visitors on the "anhui-made" cars on display. this is also the first time that anhui has held a theme day event at an international auto show.

going back in time, the hefei international new energy vehicle exhibition with the theme of "green future, smart world" opened grandly on the mid-autumn festival in 2023. this was the largest new energy vehicle exhibition in china at that time - 95 new energy vehicle brands and more than 1,000 new energy vehicles participated in the exhibition, covering the mainstream new energy brand car companies in china, and also gathered many new energy vehicle parts brands.

since the automobile industry was listed as the "first industry" in 2023, anhui, with its "strong automobile momentum", has allowed more people to see the confidence and determination of the high-quality development of the new energy automobile industry cluster.

looking back over the past 75 years, anhui automobile has grown from a "jac" truck rolling off the assembly line to the second largest automobile production and the largest exporter in the country in 2023, and its production in the first half of 2024 increased by 46.7% year-on-year... the automobile industry, listed as the "first industry" by anhui, is constantly "shifting gears and speeding up" on the road of high-quality development with an unstoppable momentum.

however, we should also see that the new energy vehicles of the future will be the intelligent ports of the internet of everything, and their influence will far exceed the original industrial ecology of automobile manufacturing. in an industry where all industries and fields are eager to enter, the new energy vehicle industry is no longer just about making a car.
