recently, reporters learned at the 2024 state-owned enterprise open day of china shipbuilding group that the construction of the domestically-produced 35,000-cubic-meter giant trailing suction dredger has made phased progress: in terms of design, about 60% of the work has been completed; in terms of construction, some sections have been completed, and it is expected to be completed and delivered in the first half of 2026. by then, the ship will become the largest trailing suction dredger in asia.
the ship was invested by china communications construction group co., ltd., developed and designed by the 708th institute of china shipbuilding industry corporation (hereinafter referred to as "708th institute"), and officially started construction by shanghai zhenhua heavy industries qidong offshore engineering co., ltd. in january this year.
according to the design, the ship is about 195 meters in length, 38.5 meters in width, 18.0 meters in depth, 13 meters in dredging draft, with a maximum mud tank capacity of about 35,000 cubic meters and a maximum dredging depth of 120 meters. the ship adopts a bulbous bow, double tail fin ship type and an advanced "one-to-two" compound drive mode, equipped with double-duct propellers, double rakes, double underwater pumps and cabin pumps, and has mud door unloading, single and double pump bow blowing and double bow spray shore discharge and other operating functions, as well as an advanced intelligent dredging control system. the ship also reserves the function of using methanol fuel.
"the ship has technical features such as strong loading capacity, strong excavation capacity, green, efficient and intelligent. it is mainly suitable for dredging, filling and deep-water sand extraction projects in the yangtze river estuary, pearl river estuary and other coastal port waterways." said fei long, a master of ship design and chief expert of the 708 institute.
according to the size, trailing suction hopper dredgers are divided into small, medium, large and giant. giant trailing suction hopper dredger refers to a trailing suction hopper dredger with a capacity of more than 30,000 cubic meters. so far, the largest trailing suction hopper dredger in china is 26,800 cubic meters, which has not yet been delivered.
fei long introduced that the biggest challenge in designing and building the 35,000-cubic-meter giant hopper dredger was to solve the key ship equipment problems such as the power system, electric drive system, and 5,000-kilowatt underwater motor. "the development of this ship will fill the equipment gap of my country's 30,000-cubic-meter giant hopper dredger, and effectively promote the development of upstream and downstream industries of dredging equipment and shipbuilding and improve the technical level." fei long said.
the 708th institute has been involved in the field of dredging equipment development and design since the 1990s. up to now, it has independently developed, designed and delivered more than 40 large, medium and small-sized trailing suction hopper dredgers, realizing the leap from importing whole ships to independent research and development of large, medium and small-sized trailing suction hopper dredgers in my country.
