"RISC-V computing architecture is becoming the native computing architecture in the AI era due to its simplicity, openness, flexibility, low power consumption, modularity and scalability." However, how to accelerate the demonstration and implementation of innovative applications of RISC-V in vertical industry scenarios? This is the key issue discussed by Wang Dongsheng, Chairman of Beijing Eswi Technology Group Co., Ltd. and others at the unveiling ceremony of the "Shanghai RISC-V Digital Infrastructure Ecosystem Innovation Center" and the launch of the "RISC-V Vehicle-Road-Cloud Collaboration 1.0 Verification Demonstration System" held in Lingang, Shanghai on August 10.
The so-called RISC-V is a free and open instruction set architecture. It is the fifth generation of RISC-based CPU instruction set architecture developed by Professor David Patterson, Turing Award winner at the University of California, Berkeley, and his research team over more than 30 years. In 2015, the University of California, Berkeley, open-sourced the RISC-V instruction set architecture. Prior to this, instruction sets were dominated by the X86 architecture (Intel) and the ARM architecture (ARM).
Just half a month ago, Wang Dongsheng first proposed the RDI (RISC-V Digital Infrastructure) industry concept in public. RDI refers to all digital infrastructures that use the RISC-V architecture, including underlying chips, hardware equipment, software systems, scenario solutions and other new-generation digital infrastructure products.
Wang Dongsheng is known as the "Father of China's Semiconductor Display Industry". BOE, which he founded in 1993, is now a global display giant. In 2019, Wang Dongsheng, who retired from BOE, was invited to join Beijing Eswin Technology to start a second business in the field of integrated circuits.
Wang Dongsheng believes that the key to the success of RDI lies in ecological construction and innovation. At present, the RDI industry is still a new thing, and the ecology is not perfect. It requires partners from all walks of life in government, industry, academia and research to work together to promote ecological innovation and industrial development.
It is worth noting that the ecological construction and innovation emphasized by Wang Dongsheng is exactly the focus of the Lingang New Area's current vigorous cultivation.
At the conference, Leng Liguo, general manager of Shanghai RDI Ecological Innovation Center, released the RISC-V Vehicle-Road-Cloud Collaboration 1.0 Verification Demonstration System. This is the world's first RISC-V Vehicle-Road-Cloud Collaboration 1.0 system for smart transportation scenarios, jointly built by Shanghai RDI Ecological Innovation Center and ecological chain partners such as Eswi Computing, Datang Gohong, Yuanshi Zhisuan, and Chelutong.
It is reported that on the vehicle side, the Shanghai RDI Ecological Innovation Center has developed an on-board OBU product prototype that complies with the 3GPP R14/R15 standards, completed the porting and verification of the C-V2X protocol stack, and realized the interconnection between the prototype and existing commercial OBU and RSU; on the road side, based on the Eswi Computing RISC-V edge computing chip, a MEC hardware product prototype was developed, and the porting and optimization of the multi-mode traffic data fusion perception algorithm was completed. The Lingang intersection traffic data was used for testing and verification. The completed tests met the SL2 level requirements, and most of the results have reached the SL3 level requirements; in the cloud, the Shanghai RDI Ecological Innovation Center developed a RISC-V server prototype hardware, and on this basis completed the porting and adaptation of a series of basic software such as operating systems, databases, and web services, and completed the development and porting of the traffic digital twin platform and application software.
This move is considered a key step in the transition from theoretical exploration to practical verification of RISC-V technology in the application of vehicle-road-cloud integrated vertical industries. Leng Liguo said that the Shanghai Innovation Center will continue to iterate and improve the RISC-V vehicle-road-cloud collaborative demonstration system, and further explore the application of RISC-V in other vertical industry scenarios to jointly promote RDI ecological construction and industrial development.
It is worth mentioning that representatives from 16 companies including Shanghai RDI Ecological Innovation Center, Lingang Digital Infrastructure, Eswi Computing, SAIC Group, Neusoft Group, Datang Gohong, Yanfeng International, Tianshu Intelligent Core, Zhongke Yushu, Yixin Technology, Jida Zhengyuan, Itron Technology, Yuanshi Intelligent Computing, Aolinco Electronics, Fengxing Zhiyuan, and Chelutong also jointly launched the "RISC-V Vehicle-Road-Cloud Collaboration 2.0 System Co-construction".
In addition, the Shanghai RISC-V Digital Infrastructure Ecological Innovation Center was officially unveiled and signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Shanghai Lingang Investment Holding Group. The innovation center is an open platform organization jointly initiated by the RDI Alliance and Lingang Investment Holding Group, aiming to aggregate RISC-V ecological chain partner resources, explore innovative applications of RISC-V in various vertical industry scenarios, and promote the development of RDI innovation ecology and industry.
Xie Tao, a professor at Peking University and chairman of the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Technology Committee of the RISC-V International Foundation, also said on the spot that the industrial concept of RDI can combine local and vertical industry needs to build a systematic solution with RISC-V as the core underlying architecture. This idea fits well with the ideas that are gradually forming a consensus internationally.
Xie Tao further talked about this idea, which is to expand the instruction set on RISC-V for specific industries or fields, unite the companies in the ecosystem to divide the work and cooperate, build the system software stack in an open source manner, contribute to the international open source community, and break the current closed and monopolistic software ecosystem.
